FinVolution Group (NYSE:FINV) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 7th of May to CN¥0.277. The payment will take the dividend yield to 2.0%, which is in line with the average for the industry. While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that FinVolution Group's stock price has increased by 47% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield. FinVolution Group's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Before making this announcement, FinVolution Group was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business. Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 63.1%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 1.9% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.NYSE:FINV Historic Dividend March 21st 2025 Check out our latest analysis for FinVolution Group FinVolution Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency Looking back, FinVolution Group's dividend hasn't been particularly consistent. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CN¥1.27 in 2019 to the most recent total annual payment of CN¥1.48. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.6% a year over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent. FinVolution Group May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 3.4% per year. While growth may be thin on the ground, FinVolution Group could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns. Our Thoughts On FinVolution Group's Dividend Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.
