  • JetBlue Airways (JBLU) has 25.4% of its float sold short, with 5.1 days to cover.

  • Debt of $8.00 billion compares with $1.66 billion of cash.

JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ:JBLU) rose 2.1% to $4.44 in pre-market trading, with 25.4% of its float sold short. The airline's Q2 adjusted loss of $0.66 per share beat the -$0.72 estimate, but $8 billion of debt, oil above $100 a barrel and analyst target cuts from Goldman Sachs and Barclays keep bears firmly in control.

JetBlue's short interest stands at 25.4 percent of the float. Short sellers borrow and sell shares expecting declines; when a heavily shorted stock rallies, they may have to buy back, fueling a squeeze.

The airline faces tough skies. Oil prices above $100 a barrel have lifted jet fuel costs, and Goldman Sachs cut its target to $4 with a Sell rating while Barclays trimmed to $5 after a Q3 update around Sept. 11. On the positive side, a Sept. 22 discussion noted air-travel Demand is holding up despite fuel uncertainty, and JetBlue waived change fees ahead of a nor'easter on Sept. 25. The next Earnings report is Oct. 27.

JetBlue (JBLU) Moves With Low-Cost Peers

Frontier rose 1.7% and Allegiant 1.1%, for a peer median of +1.4%. JBLU traded between $4.28 and $4.44 and closed mid-range. The move was small relative to its $0.21 average true range. The market Capitalization is about $1.6 billion, and the 52-week range is $3.87 to $6.62.

JBLU Technical Levels

The 14-day RSI is 38.3. RSI measures buying versus selling pressure on a 0 to 100 scale, and a reading in the high 30s shows weakness approaching oversold levels.

Support is $3.91, near the 52-week low, and resistance is $5.96, about 34% above the current price. A push toward resistance would be the squeeze scenario.

Leverage Is the Risk

JetBlue's latest reported Revenue was $9.06 billion, but its heavy Debt load leaves little Margin for error if fuel stays high. Analyst views are split: one aggregated score rates the stock Buy (2.38), while another tally of 17 analysts shows a Sell consensus with an average target near $5.17.
