MACOM Technology Solutions (NASDAQ:MTSI) was one of the strongest chip stocks in the Russell 1000 on Tuesday, October 6, trading at $350.51 after BMO Capital raised its rating to Outperform. BMO pointed to interest in MACOM's 3.2-terabit optical chipset aimed at AI data centers.

An upgrade to Outperform signals that the analysts expect the stock to do better than the broader market or its peers. In MACOM's case, the call tied the company directly to one of the hottest areas in semiconductors: the high-speed connections that move data between processors, switches and servers inside AI clusters.

Why Optics Matter for AI

As AI models grow, the bottleneck is increasingly not just raw computing power but how fast data can travel between chips and across racks. Optical links, which carry data as light over fiber, can move far more information over longer distances than copper. A 3.2-terabit chipset refers to components designed for the next generation of ultra-fast optical modules.

MACOM designs analog, radio-frequency, microwave and optical semiconductors used in data centers, telecom networks, and industrial and defense equipment. Its data-center Business has become a bigger focus for investors as cloud providers race to expand AI capacity.

A Strong Day for AI Connectivity

MACOM's upgrade landed on a day when the entire AI networking group was in favor. Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL), at its investor day, raised its fiscal 2028 Revenue outlook to $20 billion from $18 billion and set a fiscal 2031 sales target of $70 billion to $90 billion. Marvell closed at $287.01, up $15.76. Ciena (NYSE:CIEN) jumped on the read-through from Marvell and on comments from Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) chief executive dismissing concerns about overbuilding. Astera Labs (NASDAQ:ALAB), Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) and Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) also climbed, and Corning (NYSE:GLW) rose on the AI infrastructure theme.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) reached a record after its chief executive said Demand for compute continues to outrun supply. Not every chip stock joined in: equipment makers such as KLA, Lam Research and Applied Materials fell, and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) slipped.

The Market Backdrop

The S&P 500 gained 44.98 points to a record 7,818.93, and the Nasdaq Composite closed at a record just under 27,600. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 253.38 points to 51,521.28. The Russell 1000, the broad large and mid-cap benchmark that includes MACOM, tracked the large-cap gains, while the small-cap Russell 2000 dipped to about 2,830.

Treasury yields eased, with the 10-year ending near 5.28.

Orders Will Confirm the Thesis

Investors will look for evidence that customer interest in MACOM's 3.2-terabit chipset turns into orders and revenue, a point likely to come up when the company next reports. Peers' commentary will matter too, as Marvell's upbeat targets showed. Earnings season is also gathering pace, with big banks reporting on October 13, and any signs of strain in AI spending could ripple through high-flying chip stocks.
