Beat on Headline Numbers, Concern Underneath

Fortinet, Inc. (NASDAQ:FTNT) shares dropped sharply in pre-market trading after a third-quarter report that beat estimates but raised doubts about growth durability. Non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.91 compared with $0.86 expected. Billings rose 29% to $2.34 billion, revenue rose 20% to $2.08 billion, and product revenue climbed 37% to $765 million.

Investors appear to have focused on two items. Service revenue of $1.31 billion rose 13%, held back by slower service activations and enterprise agreements on large new deals, which management called a timing issue. Product revenue growth also slowed from 52% in the prior quarter. The fourth-quarter revenue guide of $2.155 billion to $2.245 billion, about 15% growth at the midpoint, sits near consensus.

Fortinet is a Sunnyvale, California cybersecurity company founded in 2000 by Ken and Michael Xie. Its FortiGate firewall franchise anchors a portfolio spanning secure SD-WAN, SASE, endpoint, cloud and security operations tools, sold through direct sales and distributors. It reported roughly $6.8 billion in revenue in 2025, up about 14%, and has about 15,000 employees.

Margins, Cash and Guidance

Non-GAAP operating margin of 38.2% was a third-quarter record, while non-GAAP gross margin of 79.6% was pressured by higher component costs after an inventory benefit in the first half. Free cash flow rose 52% to $865 million, and the board added about $1.2 billion to the buyback, leaving $2 billion authorised.

SASE firewall billings grew 31%, operational technology billings grew nearly 40%, and deals above $1 million rose 51%. Management said pricing added about 10 points to billings growth and that demand showed no slowdown entering the fourth quarter.

For the full year, Fortinet now guides billings of $9.568 billion to $9.718 billion, revenue of $8.125 billion to $8.215 billion, non-GAAP operating margin of 36.5% to 37.5% and non-GAAP EPS of $3.54 to $3.58. It did not give formal 2027 guidance.

Valuation After a Large Run

Before the drop, Fortinet had a market capitalisation of about $127.7 billion and had gained roughly 130% this year, with a 52-week range of $73.55 to $197.13. The trailing price-to-earnings ratio was 56.5 and the forward ratio 47.7. Several research firms cut price targets, and the broader technology sector was weaker, with the sector fund down about 1.1% pre-market.

What Investors Will Weigh Next

The result shows strong firewall demand alongside a services line that is growing more slowly than product sales. Whether service activations recover in the fourth quarter and how product growth holds against tougher comparisons will decide how the shares are priced after a reset of this size.
