On Friday, October 30, 2026, as the Nasdaq Composite suffered its worst day since June 5, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) was the best-holding name among the Magnificent Seven. Its shares slipped only modestly, moving with the market, while chipmakers and other megacaps fell much harder.
The backdrop was harsh. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 572.25 points to 51,770.31, and the Nasdaq dropped 747.73 points to 25,437.00. The Philadelphia Semiconductor index slid to 10,688.80 after Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) warned of cash burn and a prolonged PC slowdown. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Meta (NASDAQ:META) are trading well below their 52-week highs, and the Nasdaq-100 lost roughly $2 trillion in Market Value in October, according to market data.
Apple's shares have risen solidly this year, according to market data, and the company has not yet reported. That combination means Monday's numbers will be judged against a high bar.
Next up among the megacaps
Apple reports after the close on Monday, November 2, with consensus Earnings of about $1.99 a share. Its results arrive in a season that has punished cash burn and set a high bar for even strong results.
Alphabet reported negative free Cash Flow of $9.1 billion and suffered its worst day ever on Thursday, losing about $500 billion in market value. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) showed trailing 12-month free cash flow of negative $42.4 billion and signaled heavier spending in 2027. Meta posted its first negative quarterly free cash flow since 2012. A market analyst noted that "Together, Amazon, Google, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Meta spent more than $200bn in the third quarter alone." Apple was not on that list.
Why the bar is high
Strategists say this season has been unforgiving even for strong results. "The earnings bar is very high," an Investment strategist said. A senior market strategist said "investors are becoming more discerning following earnings."
Apple's PC exposure also matters after Intel's report. Intel said customers began signaling a PC slowdown tied to memory prices and availability, and it expects the weakness to last into 2027. Dell (NYSE:DELL) and HP fell sharply on that warning. How Apple discusses component costs and Demand could draw close attention.
A senior market analyst said "strong AI demand is no longer enough on its own," a reminder that investors are scrutinizing both spending and returns. For Apple, which has held up as investors rotated away from AI-heavy names, the question is whether its results justify that relative safety.
A crowded week
Apple's report kicks off a busy stretch. Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) also reports Monday after the close. The midterm elections take place on Tuesday, November 3, with Democrats widely predicted to win the House and the Senate more in doubt, according to market data. Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) reports November 4, and the October jobs report arrives on Friday, November 6.
The Federal Reserve is also in focus. Markets are pricing a December rate hike after the Fed held rates steady this week, and three Fed officials said on Friday that rates need to go higher.
What to watch
Investors will watch Apple's guidance for the holiday quarter, any comments on memory and component costs, and how it frames its own approach to AI spending compared with its peers.
The stock's reaction will also test whether the market's rotation into steadier names extends to Apple, or whether the selloff in megacap technology finally reaches the company that has held up best.
