Guidance, Not the Quarter Itself, Is Driving the Selloff
The quarter Zumiez (NASDAQ:ZUMZ) just reported was disappointing on its own, but it's the forward outlook that's really weighing on the stock today. Fiscal second-quarter net sales decreased 2.5% year over year to $209.0 million, below the $214.3 million analysts had expected, with comparable sales down 2.1% as international markets in Canada, Europe, and Australia posted positive comps while U.S. comparable sales fell 2.9%.
Footwear Weakness Is the Core Problem
Footwear weakness accounted for roughly 70% of the U.S. sales decline, pointing to a specific category problem rather than broad-based softness across the business. Zumiez is a specialty retailer selling apparel, footwear, accessories, and action sports hardgoods including skateboards and snowboards, operating more than 700 stores under the Zumiez, Blue Tomato, and Fast Times banners across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Profitability Deteriorated Alongside the Sales Miss
Gross Margin fell 20 basis points to 35.3%, and the operating loss widened to $1.3 million, resulting in a net loss of $2.7 million, or $0.17 per share, compared with a smaller prior-year net loss of $1.0 million, or $0.06 per share. That combination of a sales miss and margin deterioration is compounding investor concern heading into the back half of the fiscal year.
Third-Quarter Guidance Points to Further Deterioration
The company guided third-quarter total sales of $222 million to $226 million, down 5% to 6.5% year over year, with comparable sales expected to decline by a similar magnitude and EPS guided between breakeven and $0.10, well below the $0.55 per share posted in the prior-year quarter. Quarter-to-date trends through Labor Day already show net sales down 4.3%, with footwear remaining the largest negative category, suggesting the deceleration highlighted in guidance is already playing out.
