AutoNation (NYSE:AN) shares were up 2.75% at $174.00 in pre-market trading on Friday, according to market data as of 8:23 a.m. ET, after the largest US auto retailer reported third-quarter results before the bell. The gain comes on a morning when S&P 500 futures were down more than 1%, making the company one of the few consumer names moving higher.

AutoNation released its results at 6:59 a.m. ET. Revenue came in at $7.01 billion, down 0.4% from a year earlier, while adjusted Earnings Per Share rose 2% to $5.11, the seventh straight quarter of year-over-year growth in that measure. GAAP Diluted Earnings per Share fell 14% to $4.87. One market note suggests a beat was "likely," but consensus estimates were not confirmed in the sources reviewed, so it is not clear whether the result beat expectations.

Inside the quarter

Gross profit slipped 2% to $1.21 billion. The aftersales business, which includes parts and service and is typically more stable than vehicle sales, generated $616.6 million in gross profit. Finance and insurance Gross Profit was $349.0 million.

"Our team delivered another solid quarter, growing adjusted EPS for the seventh consecutive quarter," CEO Mike Manley said in the release.

Share Buybacks remain a key lever. AutoNation repurchased $162.9 million of stock in the third quarter, and its board approved a new $1.0 billion authorization in October, leaving $1.4 billion available. Buybacks reduce the share count, which helps per-share earnings grow even when revenue is flat, part of how adjusted EPS increased while sales declined.

What AutoNation does and where it sits

Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, AutoNation sells new and used vehicles across dozens of brands, runs service and collision centers, and offers financing through its AutoNation Finance arm. Its earnings depend on vehicle affordability, Credit availability and parts and service Demand from an aging US car fleet.

The stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and is a member of the NYSE Composite, which covers all common stocks listed on the Big Board. Its gain stands in contrast to a weaker broader market, with S&P 500 futures down 1.13% and Nasdaq-100 futures down 2.62% shortly after 8 a.m. ET, according to market data.

The environment for auto retail is mixed. Thursday's data showed third-quarter GDP growing at a 3.4% annualized rate and personal spending up 0.5% in September, signs consumers are still buying. However, headline PCE Inflation was 3.6% year over year, and the Federal Reserve, which held rates at 3.75% to 4.00% this week after a September hike, is seen with about 85% odds of raising rates again in December, according to futures pricing cited in media reports.

Higher borrowing costs feed directly into auto Loan payments. The 10-year Treasury Yield was near 4.94% to 4.99% early Friday, down from above 5.30% earlier in October. Oil prices are also an issue: West Texas Intermediate was trading around $104 a barrel, according to market data, which can weigh on demand for less fuel-efficient vehicles.

Tariffs remain a Factor for the industry as well. A 25% Section 232 Tariff on trucks remains in effect, according to a tariff tracker.

Risks and what to watch

The key risks are the revenue decline, which shows unit or pricing pressure, and the drop in GAAP earnings even as adjusted EPS grew. Investors will look to management's conference call for commentary on new-vehicle margins, used-car pricing and credit performance in AutoNation Finance.

After the 9:30 a.m. ET open, watch whether the pre-market gain holds as the broader market trades lower. Next week, results from other dealers and the Nov. 6 jobs report could shape the outlook for consumer demand. AutoNation's fourth-quarter report is expected in early 2027.
