Dollar Weakens on PPI Decline
US producer prices for final demand slipped 0.3% in June, revising the previous month’s gain to a modest 0.6% from an earlier 1.1% reading. Analysts had expected the index to remain flat, making the drop a surprise that nudged the dollar index down 0.09% to 100.79. The greenback also fell 0.4% in the prior session, marking its biggest two‑week decline.
The softer PPI signals easing pressure on inflation, allowing markets to entertain a less aggressive Federal Reserve stance. Over the past month the stock has gained 6.5%, though it remains 10.6% below its year‑to‑date peak. The decline in producer and consumer price growth, consumer inflation slowed to 3.5% YoY and headline CPI slipped 0.4%, offers discretionary spenders more purchasing power, a tailwind for discount‑retail chains.
Juan Perez of Monex USA noted that the Federal Reserve can afford to pause rate hikes, a sentiment echoed by New York Fed President John Williams, who said inflation may have peaked.
Outlook Tied to Middle East Tensions
At 6 a.m. ET (1000 GMT) Wednesday, the US launched a fresh wave of strikes on Iran, following President Donald Trump’s re‑imposition of a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Oil prices have climbed toward one‑month highs, keeping inflation pressures alive despite the recent PPI and CPI declines.
Steve Kolano of Integrated Partners linked the recent easing in CPI and PPI to volatile energy prices after Iran’s cease‑fire pullback, warning that the trend could reverse as oil steadies. Based on the company's earnings release dated Jul 15.
