Store productivity could shape the future of Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP) because the company's recovery depends less on opening new outlets than on getting more out of the ones it keeps. After years of underperforming its peers, the auto-parts retailer has been closing weaker stores, consolidating its Supply chain, and concentrating on the locations and formats that work best.
A point of accuracy: the shares belong to the NYSE Composite, which spans all common stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Advance Auto Parts is no longer a member of the S&P 500, having been removed as its Market Value fell.
Margins Up, Sales Flat
For the twelve weeks to July 18, 2026, net sales were $2.0 billion, essentially flat against the same period a year earlier, and comparable-store sales edged down 0.5%. The striking figure was gross margin, which expanded 290 basis points to 46.2% from 43.5%, reflecting better pricing, supply-chain work, and the exit from unproductive stores. Adjusted diluted Earnings rose to $1.03 a share from $0.69, and GAAP earnings to $0.90 from $0.25.
The company also pointed to progress on cash. It highlighted positive year-to-date free cash flow after two years of outflows, and said it had cut net leverage to 2.1 times from 2.4 times.
Guidance Raised, But Demand Soft
Advance Auto Parts reaffirmed its full-year 2026 sales guidance of $8,485 million to $8,575 million and comparable-sales growth of 1% to 2%, while lifting its adjusted diluted EPS range to $2.60 to $3.30 from $2.40 to $3.10. It trimmed planned new-store openings to 30 to 35 from 40 to 45 and increased market-hub openings to 15 to 20, prioritizing the distribution model that supports store productivity over raw expansion.
The Opportunity
If management can keep expanding margins while nudging comparable sales into positive territory, earnings could recover substantially from a low base. The auto-parts market itself is relatively resilient: an aging vehicle fleet needs maintenance and repair regardless of the economic cycle.
Two Channels and a Resilient Category
Advance Auto Parts sells into two distinct markets: do-it-yourself retail customers who buy parts for their own vehicles, and professional repair shops and installers who need the right part delivered fast and reliably. The professional channel rewards dense distribution and deep, well-placed inventory, precisely where Advance Auto Parts has historically trailed better-run competitors. Its emphasis on market hubs, larger locations that stock a wider range and supply surrounding stores, is aimed squarely at fixing that weakness.
Risks
Turnarounds are difficult, and margin gains driven by store closures and pricing can only take a Business so far; sustainable recovery ultimately requires selling more, and comparable sales aren't yet growing. The company competes against larger auto-parts chains with greater scale and deeper distribution. The market's negative reaction to a margin-beating quarter shows how much skepticism remains about whether the improvement can be sustained.
A Turnaround Still Mid-Stride
The signals that matter are the trend in comparable-store sales, especially whether they turn positive; the durability of the 46.2% gross margin as store-closure benefits annualize; progress on free cash flow and net leverage; and delivery against the raised full-year EPS guidance. Advance Auto Parts has clearly improved its profitability and balance sheet, but until sales growth returns, its turnaround remains a promising work in progress.
