HALEU Supply Deal With Antares Drives Shares Higher
Centrus Energy (NYSE:LEU) shares rose sharply in Thursday's session after the company and Antares Nuclear announced a definitive multi-year contract for Centrus to supply Antares with High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium, with deliveries beginning before the end of the decade. Centrus Energy is a Bethesda, Maryland-based supplier of nuclear fuel and related services for the nuclear power industry, pioneering domestic production of HALEU at its American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio, the only licensed HALEU production Facility in the western world.
The agreement adds another HALEU customer to Centrus' Backlog and includes prepayments from Antares to help fund the company's expanded enrichment capacity buildout, which is already underway following a multi-billion-dollar expansion launched last year.
Deal Reinforces Centrus' National Security Positioning
Because Centrus' enrichment technology and Manufacturing supply chain are U.S.-origin, the arrangement can supply Antares with fuel usable for national security missions, an "unobligated" enrichment capability the company says only its AC100 centrifuge design can currently provide. Antares is developing compact microreactors for defense and space applications and was recently selected for the U.S. Army's Janus Program, the Air Force's Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, and a Space Force Strategic Breakthrough award.
Rebound Follows a Steep Weekly Decline and Valuation Concerns
The gain follows a roughly 21% weekly decline that had pushed shares to a 52-week low near $135.85 after a $500 million Equity offering raised dilution concerns, and some analysts have flagged the stock as significantly Overvalued relative to fundamentals given a price-to-sales ratio well above its historical median. Investors are weighing the long-term strategic significance of Centrus' expanding advanced-reactor and national-security fuel supply agreements against those near-term valuation concerns and broader market Volatility tied to this week's Federal Reserve rate hike and rising Treasury yields.
Outlook: Expansion Execution Remains the Key Watch Point
Centrus shares are rebounding as the Antares contract adds another data point to the company's growing HALEU customer backlog. Continued progress on the Piketon expansion, along with any additional supply agreements, will likely be the next catalysts for the stock.
