Why Did Deposit Growth Support First Citizens?

First Citizens BancShares (NASDAQ:FCNCA) earned adjusted net income available to common holders of USD 623 million in the third quarter. Adjusted EPS was USD 55.37, down from USD 57.09 in the prior period. Loans nevertheless advanced 4.1% to USD 157.19 billion, and deposits increased 6.8% to USD 185.26 billion after 138 BMO branches joined the bank in a transaction completed September 4.

The new deposits helped repay USD 8.00 billion of the Purchase Money Note associated with the Silicon Valley Bank acquisition. That left USD 20.45 billion on the note and reduced total borrowings from USD 32.19 billion to USD 24.47 billion. Directors also authorized as much as USD 1.2 billion of Class A share repurchases during 2027. Investors responded by lifting the stock 8.15%.

Credit quality made that capital return look more durable. Net charge-offs represented only 0.27% of loans, and the CET1 ratio was 10.24%. Funding was not costless, however. Average deposit cost moved from 2.07% to 2.16%, noninterest-bearing balances slipped from 24.5% to 22.9% of deposits, and net interest margin narrowed three basis points to 3.07%. Another rate increase could intensify that pressure.

Why Did Sallie Mae Swing to a Loss?

Sallie Mae (NASDAQ:SLM) disclosed an approximately USD 32 million third-quarter net loss on October 22. Its USD 0.19 loss per share contrasted with the USD 0.17 profit forecast, a USD 0.36 difference by subtraction. Revenue also missed, and management reduced its 2026 earnings outlook because credit repair was taking longer than planned. The stock finished the next day down 10.78%, after trading roughly 9%-11% lower during the session.

Loan demand was not the immediate problem. The CECL framework requires a lender to recognize expected lifetime losses when it originates credit or when the outlook worsens. A slower decline in delinquencies therefore raises provisions immediately. Growing originations can initially add expense as well, because every new loan arrives with an upfront reserve.

Management's outlook change suggests that this burden could remain through 2026. A December rate increase could add to borrower payments and the lender's funding bill. University of Michigan sentiment at 48.0, its second-lowest recorded level, reinforces the consumer risk. More originations and new funding sources could aid results later, but only after credit performance steadies.

Why Was Flagstar's Deadline Deferred?

Flagstar Bank (NYSE:FLG), the listed entity created by an October 2025 holding-company reorganization, produced USD 3 million of common net income, or USD 0.01 per diluted share. The previous quarter delivered USD 26 million. Net interest income improved from USD 440 million to USD 460 million, and margin rose from 2.13% to 2.17%, but the credit provision increased to USD 76 million. Revenue of USD 530 million was near expectations, with data sets disagreeing on a small beat or miss. Shares fell 9.27% and reached a 52-week low.

Chief executive and executive chair Joseph M. Otting said full realization of the bank's objectives had moved from 2027 by one year because rates remained elevated, making 2028 the new milestone. Multifamily and commercial real estate loans declined 3% but still totaled USD 34.1 billion. Refinancing an apartment mortgage after its fixed period can produce a much larger payment when rates remain elevated.

The USD 76 million provision exceeded USD 66 million of adjusted pre-provision net revenue. Charge-offs were USD 74 million, or an annualized 0.49%, while criticized and classified balances rose USD 670 million, or 6%. CET1 declined from 13.16% to 12.38%, although deposits held at USD 67.8 billion. Those figures explain why better interest income could not overcome the credit concern.

What Separates the Three Lenders From Here?

The interest-rate setting reached different lines of each balance sheet. First Citizens used deposit growth to reduce an FDIC-linked obligation and create room for a repurchase authorization. Sallie Mae faced the immediate accounting effect of slower student-loan credit improvement. Flagstar confronted commercial-property stress that pushed its timetable back one year.

The contrast also appears in loss measures. First Citizens reported charge-offs of 0.27%, while Flagstar recorded 0.49% annualized and a provision larger than pre-provision profit. Sallie Mae changed its annual forecast after a USD 0.36 per-share shortfall against consensus. Buybacks remain discretionary, and forecasts are not assured.

The next checkpoints are the Fed announcement on Wednesday, October 28, and September PCE inflation on Thursday, October 29. US midterm elections follow Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Futures put the chance of a December increase at around 71%-80%. This material is not investment advice.

Balance-sheet sequencing is the practical distinction. First Citizens collected deposits through the 138 acquired branches and used that funding to reduce a purchase-related note before approving future repurchases. Sallie Mae recognized expected losses before receiving all payments on newly originated education loans. Flagstar's interest income improved, but its provision and charge-offs absorbed that benefit while a large property portfolio remained exposed to refinancing. The same policy rate can therefore help asset yields and simultaneously increase funding or credit expense.

Capital figures also set different cushions. First Citizens reported 10.24% CET1 after reducing borrowings, while Flagstar's measure moved from 13.16% to 12.38%. Stable USD 67.8 billion deposits at Flagstar did not prevent criticized and classified loans from increasing. At Sallie Mae, the annual downgrade indicated that management expected a slower repair rather than a one-quarter timing issue. The December futures probability is only market pricing, and October inflation or policy news can alter it. For that reason, neither the repurchase authorization nor the revised corporate targets should be read as a guaranteed outcome.

Funding, capital and credit should therefore be monitored separately. Deposit growth does not ensure a wider margin, an improved margin does not prevent loan losses, and origination growth can initially raise reserves. The three reactions reflected which of those channels dominated the reported quarter.

Reported capital ratios provide context, not certainty about future losses.
