Lower Spending Narrows the Loss
Vir Biotechnology (NASDAQ:VIR) filed its Quarterly Report on November 4, 2026 for the period ended September 30, 2026. The clinical-stage company develops treatments for chronic hepatitis Delta and cancer. Operating expenses were USD 104.5 million versus USD 173.7 million. Contract Manufacturing rose to USD 25.8 million from USD 9.6 million, but a USD 75.0 million milestone for VIR-5525 in the year-earlier quarter and cost recoveries from collaborators reduced the license line. Nine-month net loss was USD 141.9 million versus USD 395.1 million, aided by USD 239.3 million of license revenue recognized from the Astellas agreement. Selling, general and administrative expense rose to USD 24.4 million from USD 22.2 million on higher advisory and legal fees, and interest income was USD 9.3 million.
ECLIPSE 1 Readout Is the Near-Term Catalyst
Topline data from the pivotal ECLIPSE 1 trial in chronic hepatitis delta are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, with ECLIPSE 2 and 3 results due in the first quarter of 2027. The trials test elebsiran combined with tobevibart. Expanded Phase 2 SOLSTICE results will be presented on November 8 at a liver disease meeting. In oncology, the FDA granted Fast Track Designation to prostate cancer candidate VIR-5500, and the company expects multiple pivotal trials to begin in 2027. For HER2-targeted VIR-5818, it plans to add backfill cohorts after FDA feedback. The HER2-targeted candidate is also in dose escalation with pembrolizumab, and an EGFR-targeted candidate, VIR-5525, continues enrolling.
Gilead Cash Arrives After Quarter End
In October 2026 Vir received USD 90 million from Gilead Sciences, consisting of a USD 65 million upfront payment and a USD 25 million Equity investment. It may earn up to USD 45 million in near-term preclinical milestones and up to USD 1.74 billion in further milestones, plus royalties. Management believes existing cash and investments fund operations for at least 12 months from the filing date, but warns it may need more capital, which could dilute holders. Trial outcomes remain the central risk. A new chief financial officer joined on October 5, 2026. Nine-month operating cash outflow was USD 115.1 million versus USD 365.9 million, and the accumulated Deficit was USD 1.3 billion.
Where Things Stand
ECLIPSE 1 topline data are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, with ECLIPSE 2 and 3 following in the first quarter of 2027. Vir Biotechnology (NASDAQ:VIR) enters that window with USD 901.3 million of cash and investments, USD 90 million more from Gilead, and a narrower loss. The company is still pre-revenue from product sales, and trial results could change the outlook either way. Next markers are the November 8 SOLSTICE presentation and the ECLIPSE 1 readout. The accumulated deficit is USD 1.3 billion.
