Margin Expansion Offsets Lower Sales

Ingevity (NYSE:NGVT), a specialty materials company making activated carbon, pavement and polymer products, reported third-quarter results on November 4, 2026. Net sales of USD 305.1 million fell 8% because Road Markings was sold, yet adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 35.4% on favorable pricing and mix, strong Performance Materials operations and improved Advanced Polymer Technologies results. Higher input and logistics costs in Pavement Technologies and Advanced Polymer Technologies partly offset those gains. Adjusted Earnings from continuing operations were USD 56.7 million versus USD 48.3 million. The CEO described a mixed global Demand environment and said filtration investments are translating into customer adoption.

Performance Materials Steady, Pavement Under Pressure

Performance Materials sales were nearly flat at USD 154.1 million, with segment EBITDA of USD 83.4 million and a 54.1% margin. Resilient North American demand tied to hybrid vehicles and higher non-auto filtration pricing offset weaker automotive volumes in China and Europe. Pavement Technologies sales fell 24% to USD 106.0 million, nearly flat excluding Road Markings, and segment EBITDA dropped USD 7.3 million to USD 19.6 million, an 18.5% margin versus 19.2%. The company blames higher asphalt costs from Crude Oil inflation, which raise customers' project costs and limit demand, plus retained dis-synergy costs from the divestiture. Advanced Polymer Technologies sales rose 18% to USD 45.0 million on pricing and mix, though surcharges carried little incremental margin, so its margin fell 280 basis points to 26.0%.

Cash Flow, Buybacks and the Advanced Polymer Technologies Sale

Operating Cash Flow was USD 99.2 million and free cash flow USD 85.5 million, down USD 30.5 million and USD 32.3 million, partly because the prior year had USD 21 million of Working Capital benefits from divested businesses. Ingevity repurchased about USD 39 million of shares in the quarter at a weighted average price of USD 71.45, bringing the year-to-date total to about USD 125 million, with about USD 172 million of authorization left. Net Leverage held at 2.5 times. Management said it continues to advance a sale of Advanced Polymer Technologies, but timing of an announced agreement may extend into early 2027. Full-year free cash flow is now expected at USD 220 million to USD 230 million, excluding a USD 113.2 million litigation settlement payment in the second quarter.

Where Things Stand

The margin looks resilient for now, driven by Performance Materials and pricing, but the Pavement Business is the weak spot. Ingevity (NYSE:NGVT) raised profit per share while sales fell, and the narrowed guidance keeps the midpoint of the prior adjusted EBITDA range. Pavement margin dipped to 18.5%, and asphalt costs remain a headwind. The release gives no price move or consensus comparison. Watch the fourth-quarter pavement trend, the Advanced Polymer Technologies sale timing, filtration growth and further buybacks.
