Broad-Based Demand Recovery Drives Record Quarter
Applied Industrial Technologies Inc. (NYSE:AIT), a distributor of industrial motion, fluid power, and automation technologies, closed fiscal 2026 with its strongest organic growth quarter in more than three years, as sales strengthened across both of its Business segments amid improving underlying demand. Consolidated sales increased 10.4 percent year over year, with organic growth of 9.7 percent after netting out Acquisition and currency contributions, driven primarily by Volume rather than pricing, which contributed roughly 250 basis points.
Demand strength was broad-based across end markets, with 20 of the company's top 30 industry verticals posting positive year-over-year growth, up from 17 the prior quarter, led by metals, technology, utilities and energy, and machinery. That breadth gives management confidence the recovery reflects genuine industrial reacceleration rather than a narrow, cyclical bounce concentrated in a single sector.
Engineered Solutions Leads on Automation and Technology Demand
The Engineered Solutions segment delivered 12.9 percent organic sales growth, with automation revenue climbing more than 20 percent, the category's strongest pace in over four years, reflecting accelerating adoption of robotics, machine vision, and digital technologies as Capital spending conditions improve. Segment EBITDA margin expanded 38 basis points to 15.1 percent despite a 44 basis point headwind from higher LIFO expense.
Fluid power operations also strengthened, with sales up a high single-digit percentage as construction, metals, and machinery markets recovered, aided by continued integration progress at Hydradyne, the fluid power business acquired 18 months earlier, which posted double-digit sales growth and margin improvement of more than 200 basis points in the back half of the fiscal year. Technology vertical exposure, now representing over 15 percent of segment sales, contributed further strength through semiconductor and data center-related demand, a source of growth management expects to persist given the scale of ongoing infrastructure buildout in that space.
Service Center Segment Sustains Multi-Year Growth Streak
The Service Center segment posted 7.9 percent organic sales growth, accelerating from 4 percent the prior quarter, with 27 of 30 top industry verticals in the U.S. network posting year-over-year gains led by metals, pulp and paper, rubber and plastics, and utilities and energy. Segment EBITDA grew 16.3 percent, with margin expanding 91 basis points to 14.5 percent on stronger operating leverage.
Over the trailing five years, the segment has averaged 8 percent organic sales growth and 13 percent EBITDA growth annually, a track record management pointed to as evidence the business now carries more structural durability than in prior cycles, aided by internal sales initiatives and secular tailwinds. Growth was strongest among national strategic accounts, though smaller local accounts also posted high single-digit growth, which management characterized as a sign the broader industrial recovery is extending beyond its largest customers.
Fiscal 2027 Guidance Balances Current Momentum With Caution on Comparisons
Applied Industrial guided fiscal 2027 EPS to a range of $11.65 to $12.15, based on sales growth of 4 percent to 6.5 percent and EBITDA margins of 12.5 percent to 12.8 percent, with first-quarter organic sales growth projected at 6 percent to 8 percent building on positive order momentum that continued into July. Management said the guidance assumes stronger growth in the first half of the fiscal year followed by more moderate rates in the second half as comparisons become more difficult and given continued uncertainty around geopolitical and trade policy dynamics. The company's outlook does not assume any contribution from future acquisitions, even as executives described an increasingly productive M&A environment and reiterated that deal activity could become a more meaningful contributor to growth than in the guidance as currently structured, leaving potential upside contingent on the pace and scale of capital deployment through the year.
