Coursera (NYSE:COUR) fell sharply on Friday, October 30, 2026, after its fourth-quarter guidance came in below expectations, overshadowing better-than-expected third-quarter results. Market reports said that KeyBanc downgraded the stock, citing a softer Demand outlook, which added to the pressure. Market data, in its own coverage of the decline, did not mention the downgrade. Reports also differed on the size of the move at different points in the session, but all showed a steep drop.
Coursera, a Russell 2000 member based in Mountain View, California, runs an online learning platform that offers courses, professional certificates and degrees from universities and companies to individuals, businesses and governments.
What the numbers showed
For the third quarter, Coursera reported Revenue of $376.7 million, a sharp increase from a year earlier that reflected its combination with Udemy (NASDAQ:UDMY). Adjusted Earnings came to $0.21 a share, ahead of the $0.18 analysts expected.
The outlook was the problem. The company guided fourth-quarter revenue to a midpoint of $362 million, below the roughly $372 million analysts had forecast, and its guidance for earnings before interest, taxes, Depreciation and amortization was also lighter than expected. Coursera narrowed its 2026 revenue forecast to a range of $1.229 billion to $1.237 billion.
When a company beats on the quarter but guides lower for the next one, investors often focus on the outlook, because it says more about where the Business is heading. That pattern played out across several companies on Friday.
The downgrade
According to market data, KeyBanc cut its rating on Coursera, pointing to a softer demand outlook. The report did not give further detail on the firm's new rating or target. Analyst rating changes can amplify a move when they arrive on the same day as weak guidance, since they add another voice questioning the near-term picture.
Coursera was not alone among internet companies punished for soft outlooks. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) tumbled after its fourth-quarter revenue guide fell short and it warned that daily users could decline, while Twilio (NYSE:TWLO) and Roblox (NYSE:RBLX) also fell after their forecasts disappointed investors.
A difficult market
The broader market offered no cushion. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 572.25 points to 51,770.31 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points to 25,437.00, its worst day since June 5. The Russell 2000 declined 47.37 points to 2,811.84.
Technology and software stocks bore the brunt after Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook and cash-burn warning and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s negative trailing free Cash Flow raised fresh doubts about AI spending. "Global markets are ending an exceptionally busy week on a cautious note," a senior market analyst said. Energy, consumer staples, utilities and health care rose as investors rotated into defensive areas.
What to watch
Investors will be looking for more detail on what is driving the softer outlook, including demand trends among consumers and enterprise customers, and on how the integration of Udemy is progressing. Fourth-quarter results will show whether the company meets its guidance.
Further analyst commentary may also follow the KeyBanc move reported by market data. On the macro front, the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report on Friday, November 6, could shape sentiment toward growth stocks, as could Federal Reserve commentary ahead of its December meeting, where markets expect a rate hike.
