Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID) edged lower on a day when electric-vehicle makers reported quarterly deliveries and investors rewarded some, but not all, of the sector. Shares slipped on Friday, October 2, closing at $4.13, as electric-vehicle stocks delivered a mixed performance after a round of third-quarter delivery reports. No Lucid-specific catalyst was identified. The stock appeared to move with its EV peers, which split sharply depending on what each company reported.

Winners and Losers in EV Land

Tesla was the big winner. The company delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter, beating consensus estimates, and its shares jumped. Deliveries were still lower than a year earlier. Tesla's energy-storage deployments also topped estimates. William Blair analyst Jed Dorsheimer pointed to Tesla's Megapack winning entry into Nvidia's DSX Ready program, qualifying it as a key infrastructure component for AI data centers.

Rivian told a different story. It reported record third-quarter deliveries of 19,248, ahead of expectations of about 18,000, and reaffirmed its 2026 delivery guidance of 65,000 to 70,000. Yet Rivian fell despite record deliveries, closing at $14.30.

Legacy automakers reported much weaker EV numbers. Ford said its US EV sales were 6,047 in the quarter, and General Motors reported 25,473, both far below a year earlier as they lapped a rush of buying before a federal EV tax credit expired in 2025.

Lucid's slip put it in the group of EV makers that did not share in Tesla's gains, a reminder that investors are increasingly sorting the sector into winners and laggards.

What Lucid Does

Lucid makes luxury electric vehicles, including the Air sedan and the Gravity SUV, built in Arizona. The company competes at the premium end of the market and has been working to scale up production while managing heavy spending.

For a smaller EV maker, investor sentiment often depends on how quickly it can raise output and move toward profitability, which makes the stock sensitive to signals about overall EV demand.

A Strong Day for Consumer Stocks Overall

Consumer discretionary was the best-performing S&P 500 sector on Friday, largely thanks to Tesla. The broader market rose after a weak September jobs report showed only 29,000 jobs added, far below forecasts near 84,000.

That caused odds of another Federal Reserve rate hike in October to collapse, though they partly recovered later. The Fed raised rates on September 16 for the first time since 2023, as an oil shock tied to the war with Iran pushed Inflation higher.

The Nasdaq Composite gained 319.27 points to 27,190.86, touching an intraday all-time high without setting a record close. The Nasdaq-100 notched a record close at 30,807.93.

Fuel prices remain high. US diesel averaged $6.37 a gallon on October 2, just below the record $6.52 on September 22. The G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel over four months, which pushed oil prices lower.

Treasury yields reversed from early declines to close higher, with the 10-year near its highest level since 2002. Higher borrowing costs can weigh on car buyers who finance purchases.

Rivian's Results Will Offer Another Demand Check

Rivian reports third-quarter results on October 29, giving another read on demand for EVs outside Tesla. The Fed's October 27 to 28 meeting will matter for auto financing costs. For Lucid, any update on production and demand for its vehicles will be key to whether the stock can break away from the sector's mixed mood.
