A Massive Earnings Beat Drives the Rally

Cracker Barrel (NASDAQ:CBRL) shares are surging today after the company delivered fiscal fourth-quarter results that sharply exceeded expectations, with adjusted Earnings Per Share of $0.99 crushing the consensus estimate of $0.17.

The Lebanon, Tennessee-based company operates a nationwide chain of combination full-service restaurants and country-themed gift shops, primarily located along interstate highways and in regional population centers across roughly 45 states. Approximately 80% of Revenue comes from restaurant sales of homestyle American comfort food, with the remaining share coming from its retail stores offering rocking chairs, apparel, toys, cookware, and specialty food items.

Revenue Topped Estimates Despite a Smaller Footprint

Total revenue of $849.3 million topped expectations even though it declined 2.2% year-over-year, a decrease tied to a smaller store footprint after the company trimmed its store count as part of a longer-term strategy. Comparable restaurant sales were down 2.1%, with traffic down 6.1%, but retail comps rose 0.7% in what the company described as its strongest retail comp growth since the second quarter of fiscal 2023, a sign of improving momentum within the smaller, more focused store base.

A Tariff Refund and Cost Discipline Supported the Beat

The results benefited from a $15 million tariff refund, partly offset by $10 million in legal settlements, alongside adjusted EBITDA of $62.1 million, up 11.4% year-over-year. The company also strengthened its Balance Sheet significantly during the quarter, reducing total Debt by $147.4 million and generating $77 million in net proceeds from a sale-leaseback transaction, while maintaining its regular quarterly dividend.

An Upbeat Fiscal 2027 Outlook Adds to the Optimism

Management issued fiscal 2027 guidance calling for total revenue of $3.325 billion to $3.4 billion, comparable restaurant sales growth of approximately 3% to 5% through the year, and adjusted EBITDA of $180 million to $200 million, with no new store openings planned for the fiscal year. New CEO Dave Dino, six weeks into the role, outlined three priorities, food quality upgrades, improved guest experience, and stronger people development, framing today's results as early evidence that those priorities are translating into measurable improvement even amid a broader industry backdrop of soft consumer traffic and elevated cost pressures.
