Key Highlights
- Sam Altman said in an interview published September 12, 2026 that going public now would be ill-advised given safety concerns, adding: I would say not 2026.
- OpenAI is reportedly in talks to raise at least USD 30 billion at a USD 1.4 trillion valuation, versus USD 852 billion in March, as a bridge to a 2027 listing.
- Investors holding the AI trade through Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) lose a near-term Supply event, while Anthropic, near USD 2 trillion, may list first in November.
- OpenAI confidentially filed IPO papers in June 2026, so this is a timing decision rather than a withdrawal, conditioned on safety and alignment progress.
What Altman Said and Why It Matters
In an interview at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters, published September 12, 2026, Altman said: "I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public." Asked about 2026, he answered: "I would say not 2026." He added that society needs to contend with these models at each level of capability. The remarks landed amid AI safety headlines, including a public resignation and warning from an Anthropic researcher. Altman also pointed to OpenAI's complicated structure, split between a nonprofit and for-profit entities, as what lets it put mission ahead of Shareholder interests. A listed OpenAI would owe duties to public shareholders, so the company wants safety work done first. Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) holders should note this is a conditional delay, not a cancellation, and no new date has been set.
A Bigger Private Round Instead of a Listing
Funding has not stopped. On September 29, 2026 it was reported that OpenAI is in talks to raise at least USD 30 billion at a USD 1.4 trillion valuation, framed as a bridge before an expected 2027 debut. Discussions that surfaced September 15 had a range of USD 1.2 trillion to USD 1.5 trillion. These are talks, not a closed deal. For scale, OpenAI raised USD 122 billion in March at an USD 852 billion valuation. The new mark would be roughly 64 percent higher (own arithmetic: 1.4 trillion divided by 852 billion). Annualized Revenue topped USD 40 billion in August, and CFO Sarah Friar said enterprise revenue grew 32 percent from June to July. At USD 1.4 trillion, the valuation would be about 35 times August annualized revenue (own arithmetic). Private investors are effectively being asked to wait for public liquidity.
Public Market Read-Through: Anthropic, SpaceX and Yields
Rivals are moving. Anthropic's IPO has slipped to November and is expected to raise up to USD 100 billion at a valuation near USD 2 trillion, which would top the record USD 86 billion raised by SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) in its June 12 listing at USD 135 (about USD 75 billion base, about USD 86 billion including the greenshoe). The backdrop is demanding. The 10-year Treasury Yield reached about 5.21 percent on September 28, its highest since 2007, after the Fed raised rates to 3.75 to 4.00 percent on September 16. Oura postponed its Nasdaq IPO on September 29 citing market uncertainty. Listed AI leaders still carry the theme. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) added USD 150 billion to its buyback on September 28, and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) hit its 2026 high on September 25. Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) tracks the Nasdaq-100, where these names carry heavy weight.
Where Things Stand
Yes, OpenAI can sit out 2026 and still raise capital, because private investors are reportedly willing to fund at USD 1.4 trillion, but that depends on appetite surviving a 10-year yield above 5 percent and a crowded November calendar. The delay removes a large supply event and hands Anthropic the first move among frontier labs. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) are exposed to OpenAI demand, yet neither needs its listing. Nvidia reports third-quarter results on November 17, an upcoming marker. Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) is one liquid way investors express AI exposure. This is information, not advice.
