Nebius Group (NASDAQ:NBIS) shares were changing hands at $158.63 in pre-market trading on Friday, down 7.77%, according to premarket movers data as of 8:23 a.m. ET. The drop put the AI cloud provider among the steepest decliners in a broad selloff across artificial intelligence infrastructure stocks.
An automatically generated news note ties the move to reports of lower hyperscaler Capital spending, including a Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) capex figure that came in under the highest Wall Street estimate. The note itself warns that such notes summarize recent news and "may not be the direct cause of a price move." No Nebius-specific announcement was identified in the sources reviewed, so the decline looks like part of a sector-wide reset rather than a reaction to company news.
The capex question hanging over AI clouds
Nebius rents out GPU computing capacity to companies Training and running AI models, a Business that lives and dies on how much money the industry's biggest buyers are willing to commit to compute. This week's Earnings from the largest US cloud and internet platforms put that spending under a harsh light.
Microsoft reported fiscal first-quarter capital expenditure, including finance leases, of $45.2 billion on Wednesday, up 30% from a year earlier but below the $50.67 billion high-end estimate, according to one report. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) posted record capex of $51.4 billion alongside negative free Cash Flow of $9.1 billion, and its shares fell 12.6% on Thursday, their worst day since the company's 2004 IPO.
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) followed after Thursday's close with a reaffirmed 2026 capex plan of roughly $220 billion and a trailing 12-month free cash outflow of more than $42 billion, according to market commentary. Its shares were about 7% lower before the bell. The tension for investors is two-sided: heavy spending supports Demand for AI capacity, but Negative cash flow raises doubts about how long that spending can be sustained.
Index position and market backdrop
Nebius trades on Nasdaq and is a constituent of the Nasdaq Composite, which tracks nearly all Nasdaq-listed common stocks. High-beta AI names like Nebius tend to amplify the direction of the tech-heavy indexes on days like this one.
The backdrop is unforgiving. Nasdaq-100 futures were down 2.62% at 28,788.75 shortly after 8 a.m. ET, according to market quotes, while S&P 500 futures fell 1.13% and Dow futures were essentially flat. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) was indicated roughly 25% lower after a weak fourth-quarter outlook, and chip names from Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) to Micron (NASDAQ:MU) were down between 2% and 9% pre-market, according to market reports.
Rates are not helping speculative Growth Stocks either. The Federal Reserve held its policy rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday after a September hike, and futures pricing pointed to about 85% odds of another increase in December, according to media reports. The 10-year Treasury Yield sat near 4.94% to 4.99% early Friday.
Risks and what to watch
The main risk for Nebius holders is that the market keeps repricing the entire AI Supply chain on capex fears, regardless of individual company results. A second risk is concentration: AI cloud providers depend on a relatively small number of large customers and on continued access to capital to fund Data Center build-outs.
On the other side, hyperscaler spending plans remain enormous in absolute terms, and none of the big platforms announced cuts this week. Nvidia, AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) and Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) also showed interest in backing Meta (NASDAQ:META)'s recent Equity raise, a sign suppliers remain committed to the build-out.
Traders will watch whether Nasdaq futures stabilize after the 9:30 a.m. ET open and how other AI cloud and data center names trade. Next week brings Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) results on Monday, US midterm elections on Tuesday, AMD and Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) earnings during the week, and the October jobs report on Friday, Nov. 6. Nebius's own third-quarter report date was not confirmed in the materials reviewed.
