Applied Digital (NASDAQ:APLD) closed at $24.53 on Monday, September 28, down 6.55% from $26.25, even as Jones Trading began coverage with a Buy rating and a $70 price target. An initiation is the first research report a brokerage publishes on a stock, and this one landed against a more cautious call from a week earlier.
One Stock, Two Price Targets
Jones Trading analyst Kevin Dede started at Buy, pointing to Applied Digital's execution and its investment-grade customer base, and to the company's shift from crypto-mining infrastructure toward AI-focused data centers. A $70 target is nearly three times Monday's close. On September 21, Rothschild & Co Redburn analyst Alex Haissl had initiated at Neutral with a $22 target, which was below the roughly $28 the shares traded at then.
Both are the firms' own views, and the gap between them shows how differently analysts value a company that builds and leases facilities for AI computing. Redburn used a discounted Cash Flow model, which estimates what future cash is worth today, and that method is sensitive to the cost of capital. Jones Trading, for its part, cited the company's customer base and execution, which points to a different weighting of the same risks.
Monday's close sits between the two targets: more than 11% above Redburn's $22 and about 65% below Jones Trading's $70. Neutral, in analyst shorthand, means the firm expects the shares to perform roughly in line with the market.
Financing Costs Weigh on Builders
Data-center developers usually finance construction with borrowed money and earn returns over many years, so they feel bond moves quickly. Treasury yields surged to multi-year highs, with the 10-year at its highest since 2007 and the 30-year at its highest since 2004. When safe Government Bonds pay more, stocks that trade on future Earnings usually feel it first. Energy costs added to the strain. Crude rose after President Trump rejected Iran's plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, leaving Brent near $105.28 a barrel.
Applied Digital's peers fell as well. TeraWulf (NASDAQ:WULF) closed down 3.94% and Core Scientific (NASDAQ:CORZ) down 4.73%, so Applied Digital's decline was steeper than either. Beyond the group, smaller companies were under pressure as a group. The Russell 2000 dropped 19.64 points, and Nasdaq stocks set 461 new 52-week lows compared with only 50 new highs.
What to Watch for Applied Digital
The company said its fiscal first-quarter 2027 conference call will be held on Wednesday, October 7, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Investors will look for updates on tenant contracts, power availability and construction timelines, the areas where the bull and bear cases differ most.
Investors face a run of data this week, starting with JOLTS and consumer confidence on Tuesday, followed by PCE Inflation on Wednesday, ISM Manufacturing on Thursday and jobs on Friday. Hot data could push yields higher again, a direct headwind for capital-hungry builders, and investors will also see whether more brokerages initiate coverage now that targets sit so far apart.
