Lightbridge (NASDAQ:LTBR) climbed on Tuesday, October 6, as part of a broad rally in nuclear energy stocks. No company-specific announcement was found to explain the move; instead, the Russell 2000 member appeared to ride the wave of enthusiasm that followed Constellation Energy's (NASDAQ:CEG) new agreement to Supply Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) with nuclear power.
Lightbridge is a development-stage company working on advanced nuclear fuel designed to improve the performance and Economics of existing and future reactors. Because it is still developing its technology, its stock tends to respond to big-picture news about the future of nuclear power rather than to near-term sales.
The Trigger
Constellation Energy rocketed after signing a 20-year agreement with Google for 3,590 megawatts of power. The total includes 890 megawatts of new capacity from upgrades at 11 reactors across Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and about 2,700 megawatts from existing plants. Constellation said it would invest more than $4.3 billion and expects the first upgrades by 2028, with about 7,200 construction jobs tied to the work.
That came less than a week after Constellation agreed a 690-megawatt deal with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Two long-term contracts with technology giants in quick succession sent a clear signal to the market about Demand for steady, carbon-free electricity to run AI data centers.
Upgrading reactors to produce more power, known as uprating, can also increase the amount of fuel those reactors need over time. For companies in the fuel chain, that is part of the appeal: more output from existing plants, and potentially new reactors later, could mean more demand for nuclear fuel and fuel services.
Fuel Names and Reactor Developers Move Together
The rally reached across the nuclear supply chain. Centrus Energy (NYSE:LEU), which supplies enriched uranium, jumped, and uranium-focused Exchange-traded funds climbed. Reactor developers rose too: NANO Nuclear Energy (NASDAQ:NNE) and Oklo (NYSE:OKLO) each gained, and NuScale Power (NYSE:SMR) and X-Energy (NASDAQ:XE) also advanced. BWX Technologies (NYSE:BWXT) rose after its microreactor was chosen for a transportable plant project in Canada.
Larger power producers joined in. Vistra (NYSE:VST), Talen Energy (NASDAQ:TLN) and NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG) all moved sharply higher, and utilities led the S&P 500's sectors.
A Split Market
The surge in nuclear names contrasted with a soft day for small caps overall. The Russell 2000 fell to about 2,830, down roughly 16 to 17 points, even as the S&P 500 rose 44.98 points to a record 7,818.93 and the Nasdaq Composite closed at a record just under 27,600. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 253.38 points to 51,521.28.
Treasury yields eased, with the 10-year ending near 5.28, while oil swung during the session as Brent hovered around $100 a barrel. Energy security and the cost of fossil fuels remain part of the argument for nuclear power, alongside AI-driven electricity demand.
Fuel Testing Updates Will Be the Next Signal
Investors will watch for more long-term power contracts between technology companies and nuclear operators, which have become a key driver for the sector. Any Lightbridge updates on fuel testing, partnerships or regulatory steps would draw attention.
