Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) crept higher on Friday, closing at $229.13. The customer-relationship software company had no company-specific news. Its gain came as software and cybersecurity stocks staged one of the day's strongest rebounds, though Salesforce's advance was smaller than many peers'.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 423.31 points to 51,654.95. The S&P 500 rose 46.18 points to 7,811.54 and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 172.83 points to 27,366.17.
What sparked the swing
The week's software story started with a scare. On Thursday, a media report said that OpenAI's annualized Revenue was about $50 billion at the end of September, roughly $20 billion below a figure that had circulated in late September. AI-linked stocks slid: Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) all fell sharply, and the Nasdaq Composite lost ground.
By Friday, sentiment had steadied. A separate media report said OpenAI expects to reach or exceed $70 billion by year-end. The IGV software fund and the CIBR cybersecurity fund both jumped, while chipmakers lagged. Over the week, software rose and semiconductors fell, which one weekly review described as leadership moving out of the AI trade.
Leaders and laggards in software
Salesforce's gain looked modest beside the session's leaders. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) climbed $12.46 to $535.07, and Oracle, a major OpenAI infrastructure partner, rose $6.21 to $141.40. Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) advanced $10.27 to $209.05, Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ:PANW) and CrowdStrike (NASDAQ:CRWD) gained with the cybersecurity group, and Datadog (NASDAQ:DDOG) rallied after CIBC (NYSE:CM) reiterated its Outperform rating and raised its price target.
Salesforce has spent the past few years building AI agents and automation into its sales, service and Marketing software, which places it in the middle of the debate over how much AI will lift spending on Business applications. Friday's move suggests investors were willing to return to software broadly, while not singling Salesforce out.
Risks still in view
Not everyone is relaxed about AI. Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB)'s George Saravelos said: "The biggest systemic risk in the market next year is not France but 'something going wrong' in the AI ecosystem". Separately, Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA)-backed Australian data-center firm Firmus withdrew its planned initial public offering, citing market Volatility and poor demand, according to market data.
Rates also matter for software valuations, which depend on profits far into the future. The 10-year Treasury Yield held near a 24-year high, and the Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023. Fed Governor Christopher Waller said Thursday he anticipates additional hikes to bring Inflation back to the Fed's goal.
Some strategists pointed to a seasonal tailwind. Deutsche Bank strategist Jim Reid said "we've now entered what has historically been a much stronger seasonal period", and noted that the S&P 500 has risen in 21 of the last 23 midterm cycles, according to a market report.
Breadth was supportive: gainers outnumbered losers on the NYSE by about 1.65 to 1, and the VIX volatility gauge eased to 14.84.
OpenAI Revenue News and AI Budgets at Corporate Customers Will Test the Software Rebound
Stocks trade on Monday, October 12, Columbus Day, while the Bond Market is closed. September consumer price data come on Wednesday, October 14, followed by producer prices and retail sales on Thursday. Bank Earnings kick off Tuesday with JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), Citi (NYSE:C) and Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC), and Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE:TSM) reports Thursday, a key read for AI demand. The Fed meets October 27–28. For Salesforce, further news on OpenAI's revenue trajectory and how corporate customers are budgeting for AI tools will shape whether the software rebound has staying power.
