Preliminary Update Lands Far Above Guidance on AI Platform Demand
Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) shares rose 12.04% pre-market today to $36.38, a gain of $3.91 from the prior close of $32.47. The move follows a preliminary business update for the fiscal first quarter of 2027, which ended September 30, 2026. The company said the revenue upside came primarily from increased demand for AI platforms.
Supermicro, based in San Jose, California, designs and manufactures modular server, storage and networking solutions built on its Building Block Solutions architecture. Its products include liquid-cooled and air-cooled AI and GPU servers, and it serves enterprise, cloud, AI and edge customers. The company has about 7,000 employees and reported roughly $39.1 billion in revenue in fiscal 2026.
Revenue and Margin Both Clear the Guided Range
Preliminary revenue is estimated at $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, against prior guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Market estimates had sat near $15 billion, so even the low end of the new range is well above expectations.
Gross margin is estimated at 12.0% to 12.5%, compared with guidance of 10.4% to 10.8%. The company attributed the improvement primarily to customer and product mix. Evercore described the margin result as impressive but noted open questions about the customer mix behind it.
Rebound Follows an Eighteen Percent Five-Day Slide
The regular session on October 20 was modest, with shares closing up 1.15% at $32.47. The update arrived after a roughly 18% five-day decline tied to worries about AI spending, an export-smuggling case and a CFO change.
Peers also moved on the news. Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) both rose in extended trading. Supermicro's 52-week range runs from $19.48 to $54.53, so the stock remains well below its high even after the jump.
Valuation Metrics Stay Low Against Earnings of $3.58 a Share
Supermicro reports earnings of $3.58 per share, with a forward P/E of 6.99 and a trailing P/E of 9.96. The figures in the update are unaudited and based on management estimates. The company cautioned that final results may differ materially after its financial close.
Next Up: November 3 Earnings Call
The net takeaway is a sharp upside surprise on both revenue and margin that has reversed part of a recent slide. Investors will watch the November 3 call for final figures, more detail on customer mix behind the margin gain, and any commentary on demand and backlog.
