Weak Fourth-Quarter Bookings Guide Overshadows a Third-Quarter Beat
Roblox (NYSE:RBLX) shares are trading down 15.29% today at $44.44, following the company's third-quarter report released after the previous close. The stock had finished that session at $52.46 and slid sharply in extended trading once the results and outlook were out.
The company beat expectations for the quarter, posting an adjusted loss of $0.32 per share against an expected loss of $0.43. Attention has instead centered on guidance for fourth-quarter bookings to decline 10% to 15% year over year, to a range of $1.89 billion to $2.0 billion. Management attributed the weaker outlook to seasonal user patterns and the expected build-out of AI systems.
Bookings Down 12% and Users Down 9% From a Year Earlier
Third-quarter bookings came in near $1.7 billion, a 12% decline from the prior year, though above the high end of the company's own guidance. Daily active users totaled 138 million, down 9% year over year but up 12% from the second quarter. Hours engaged were close to 34 billion, down 15% from a year ago. Daily users have rebounded from the second quarter, yet engagement and bookings remain below last year's levels.
The net loss narrowed to $230 million from $258 million, and adjusted EBITDA rose to $138 million from $46 million. Free Cash Flow was $364 million, helped by about $140 million of Capital spending shifting from the third quarter into the fourth.
Rising AI Infrastructure Costs Weigh on the Fourth-Quarter Loss Outlook
For the fourth quarter, Roblox guided to a net loss of $363 million to $423 million and an adjusted EBITDA loss of $10 million to $70 million. Fourth-quarter capital spending is planned at $380 million, bringing the 2026 total to $468 million. Infrastructure expense is expected to climb in the fourth quarter and into 2027, driven by AI projects such as model training.
Management said the outlook reflects normal seasonal declines in users and does not assume recent hit-game strength or Halloween activity repeats. It also built in a modest headwind from the release of Grand Theft Auto, while noting limited data to size the effect.
Balance Sheet Support and Product Launches Frame Roblox's Next Steps
Roblox reported about $5 billion in net cash and has repurchased more than $400 million of stock over recent quarters under a $3 billion authorization. Ahead of the report, the shares were down about 37% for the year as of October 19, with a consensus price target near $49.89 and a $38 target from Jefferies, which rates the stock Underperform.
The next items to watch are the December 2026 U.S. launch of Roblox Build, the first-half 2027 rollouts of Roblox Everywhere and Roblox Reality, and whether bookings stabilize after the fourth quarter. The company has been giving quarterly guidance only since July, so the next report will set the path for early 2027.
