Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) announced a long-term joint development agreement with EssilorLuxottica to accelerate next-generation optical systems for augmented reality and AI-powered smart glasses.

The partnership brings together Applied Materials’ materials-engineering and waveguide expertise with EssilorLuxottica’s eyewear, lens and smart-glasses capabilities. The companies aim to develop scalable optical platforms for lightweight, high-performance visual computing devices.

The agreement focuses on advanced optical technologies, including waveguides, adaptive lens systems and materials innovation. Waveguides are a critical component in augmented-reality glasses because they guide projected images through transparent lenses while preserving visibility of the real world.

The companies will also work on light-adaptive and electro-active lens technologies. These systems can adjust tint dynamically and support future intelligent lenses designed for changing light conditions and digital visual experiences.

Research and development will be conducted through a dedicated collaboration lab at Applied Materials’ Silicon Valley campus. The structure is intended to move technologies from research into manufacturable optical systems.

The agreement comes as large technology and eyewear companies increase investment in smart glasses. Wearable devices are expected to require improvements in display brightness, power efficiency, lens weight and optical performance before mass adoption can expand further.

Applied Materials’ role is linked to its position in materials engineering and advanced display technologies. The company supplies tools and process technologies used across semiconductors and displays, including applications that support AI and next-generation computing.

EssilorLuxottica brings scale in eyewear manufacturing and distribution. The group operates across 150 countries and generated €28.5 billion in consolidated revenue in 2025.

The companies also plan to explore additional strategic opportunities tied to technologies created through the collaboration. No immediate financial terms were disclosed in the announcement.

For Applied Materials, the deal broadens its exposure beyond traditional chipmaking equipment and advanced displays into intelligent optics. The announcement also aligns with rising demand for hardware capable of supporting AI-assisted wearable devices.
