  • Campus is expected to create up to 3,000 jobs and support AI and HPC applications.

Amkor Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMKR) has commenced construction of a new semiconductor advanced packaging and test campus in Arizona, with a total investment of USD 7B across two phases. The expansion adds additional cleanroom space and a second greenfield facility, increasing the original investment by more than USD 5B.

The project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen U.S. semiconductor production, backed by the Trump Administration, the CHIPS for America Program, the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, and state and local government support. Once completed, the campus will provide over 750,000 sq. ft. of cleanroom space and create as many as 3,000 jobs. The first facility is scheduled for completion in mid-2027, with production expected to start in early 2028.

“This groundbreaking represents a bold step in Amkor’s long-term strategy for growth and innovation,” said Giel Rutten, president and CEO of Amkor. “We’re building a facility to meet our customers’ most advanced needs that will help shape the future of semiconductor manufacturing in the United States. Arizona offers the right mix of talent, infrastructure, and industry presence, and we’re proud to deepen our roots here.”

Campus Capabilities and Industry Applications

The Arizona campus will feature high-volume semiconductor packaging and test operations, incorporating smart factory technologies and scalable production lines. The facilities are designed to support sectors including AI, high-performance computing (HPC), mobile communications, and automotive applications. The campus will complement front-end wafer fabrication at TSMC Arizona. Key customers include Apple and NVIDIA.

“AI has ignited a new industrial revolution — and with it, the chance to reindustrialize America. Amkor’s new Arizona facility is a defining milestone in bringing this capability home,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

Support from Government and Industry Partners

Several public and private stakeholders highlighted the project’s significance:

  • Sabih Khan, Apple COO: “Factories across the United States are producing 19B chips for Apple this year alone, and Amkor’s new facility will package and test Apple silicon produced at TSMC Arizona.”
  • Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce: “Our partnership with Amkor will bring high-volume advanced packaging to the U.S. for the first time.”
  • Jun He, TSMC VP: “Our collaboration in Arizona will provide customers with a streamlined, domestic ecosystem, designed to help define the future of local semiconductor manufacturing.”

State and local leaders also emphasized the economic benefits and workforce impact of the campus, underlining Arizona’s growing role as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing.
