DRDGOLD Surges on Record Annual Results

DRDGOLD (NYSE:DRD) shares closed up 14.53% at $27.83 on August 19, extending an intraday gain that pushed the stock to a new 52-week high after the company reported Blowout FY2026 results. The rally builds on a broader rise in gold prices this week, with bullion climbing toward record highs after the US Treasury Department announced it would double its buyback operations on long-term securities, a move that pulled longer-term Treasury yields sharply lower and increased the appeal of holding non-interest-bearing precious metals.

DRDGOLD is a South African gold Mining company and world leader in large-scale, mechanized surface tailings retreatment, founded in 1895 and headquartered in Johannesburg. Rather than pursuing conventional underground mining, DRDGOLD retreats historical mine waste from the Witwatersrand Basin through its Ergo and Far West Gold Recoveries operations, recovering gold and silver while conducting environmental rehabilitation. The company processes roughly 19.5 million tonnes of tailings annually and is pursuing a R7.8 billion expansion targeting 200,000 ounces of production per year by FY2028.

Record Revenue, Earnings, and Production Guidance

For the fiscal year, DRDGOLD reported revenue of ZAR 11.2 billion, a 42% increase, driven by a roughly 40% rise in average gold prices and production that came in above the top end of guidance. Operating profit rose 83% to ZAR 6.4 billion, and headline earnings increased 89% to ZAR 4.25 billion, equivalent to 492 SA cents per share, up from 261 cents a year earlier. Free Cash Flow rose 85% to between ZAR 2.2 billion and ZAR 2.3 billion after ZAR 3.5 billion in capital expenditure.

Management responded to the results by tripling the final dividend to 120 SA cents per share, bringing total FY2026 dividends to over R1 billion and representing 65% of free cash flow for the year. The company said its Balance Sheet remains debt-free, with cash and cash equivalents of ZAR 2.8 billion.

Vision 2028 Expansion on Track

DRDGOLD's Vision 2028 capital program is roughly halfway complete, with key milestones including commissioning of the Ergo Dr Fontaine tailings Facility and the first gold pour from the Far West Gold DP2 smelter house. The new Vitol tailings storage facility is targeted for beneficial occupation to enable full 1.2 million tonnes per month throughput by the first quarter of FY2028, though full authorization delays could create a modest interim shortfall of roughly 150,000 tonnes per month. For FY2027, the company guided to production of 160,000 to 170,000 ounces, with cash costs of just over R1 million per kilogram and all-in sustaining costs of just over R1.2 million per kilogram.

What This Means for Investors

The tripled dividend signals management's confidence that this year's cash generation is durable, not a one-off from the gold price spike, since the Payout Ratio held at 65% of free cash flow rather than expanding to return a windfall. The real swing Factor for FY2027 is the roughly 150,000 tonnes per month interim shortfall flagged around the Vitol facility's authorization timeline; if that delay resolves on schedule, DRDGOLD moves through peak capital spending and toward the full-throughput, lower-capex phase of Vision 2028 investors have been waiting for.
