Key Highlights
- Value shares within the S&P 500 outpaced the benchmark’s growth cohort by close to 8 percentage points through October 23, 2026, the widest monthly advantage since December 2000.
- A 1.96% weekly rise ended six consecutive losing weeks for the Russell 2000 fund, while the S&P 500 declined approximately 0.5%.
- Nasdaq 100 futures were 0.13% lower near 29,080 on October 26, even as contracts tied to the Dow and S&P 500 advanced.
- A free-cash-flow deficit at Meta Platforms and an approximately 9.4% weekly decline reinforced doubts about the return on AI capital expenditure.
Is the Style Shift Giving IWD an Advantage Over QQQ?
IWD (NYSEARCA:IWD) owns large US businesses selected for lower valuations relative to book value and earnings, producing larger allocations to banks, oil producers, medical businesses and manufacturers. Through October 23, the benchmark’s value component had surpassed its growth counterpart by close to 8 percentage points during October 2026. That was the largest monthly difference on this measure since December 2000. IWD follows Russell benchmarks rather than those S&P style indexes, so the comparison describes the broader factor trade instead of the fund’s exact return. Weekly sector moves supported the pattern: energy added 1.6%, health care rose 1.45% and financials gained 0.68%, while communication services dropped 4.36%.
Growth leadership weakened as scrutiny moved to AI investment. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) deepened that concern by reporting negative free cash flow and losing about 9.4% during the week. The seven dominant technology businesses account for just under 29% of the broad benchmark, and a basket containing those names lost 1.70% across the week. Heavy AI-chip and platform weights therefore hurt growth benchmarks. Value received the other side of the macro effect. Brent over USD 110 helped energy earnings, and a 4.999% 10-year Treasury yield can support bank lending margins while reducing the present value assigned to distant growth profits.
Three developments could stop the move. Diplomacy may remove part of the Middle East premium supporting oil. Strong hyperscaler results could restore confidence in AI returns and send capital back toward growth. Economic weakness is the third concern: University of Michigan sentiment reached 48.0, and slower consumption would weigh on cyclical financial and industrial holdings.
Can IWM Extend Its First Gain in Seven Weeks?
IWM (NYSEARCA:IWM) tracks about 2,000 smaller US companies through the Russell 2000 and carries a much smaller allocation to giant technology businesses behind the broader selloff. It gained 1.96% in the week ended October 23, 2026, its first advance following six weekly declines. The Nasdaq Composite lost 0.76% over the same interval. On Friday, the Russell 2000 itself eased 0.29% to 2,775.90. Software participated in the rebound: the primary sector fund added about 6% during the week. CrowdStrike Holdings (NASDAQ:CRWD) added 8.25% on Friday and closed at USD 257.57.
The advance offered a way to retain equity exposure without the same AI concentration. Fund flows, however, distinguished between broad and selective small-cap demand. Around USD 928.9 million left IWM, while the a small-cap value strategy from Avantis attracted about USD 471.4 million. That split points to preference for profitable, lower-priced small businesses rather than the whole benchmark. Software’s move had a separate foundation, including US agency warnings about weaknesses in common web software and a broker survey indicating firmer security budgets.
Financing conditions remain the constraint. Small businesses rely more heavily on bank credit and speculative-grade debt. High-yield spreads reached 340 basis points, a width last seen in March, and the 2-year Treasury yield reached 4.686% on Friday. Futures assigned about 71% to 80% probability to a December Fed increase. A single positive week cannot confirm a new trend after six negative ones. For the fund, chart watchers identify USD 270 as support, followed by resistance around USD 286.
Why Are QQQ Futures Still Lagging After the Rout?
QQQ (NASDAQ:QQQ) follows the Nasdaq 100, whose futures were the laggard early October 26, 2026 despite firmer contracts elsewhere. The technology contract was down 0.13% and hovered near 29,080, while Dow futures added 0.32% toward 52,560, and the S&P 500 contract advanced 0.14% around 7,670. Nasdaq 100 futures had traded over 30,000, earlier in October; comparing the published levels puts the later level roughly 3% lower. Brent pulled back approximately 1.5% to 1.8% around USD 115 following President Trump’s statement that there would be no strike on Iran that day.
Cheaper crude can support technology by easing inflation expectations and bond yields. Positioning offset that benefit. The Nasdaq 100’s 2.9% October 22 decline was its steepest since June, leaving investors cautious before Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) publish results October 28. Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) follows October 29. For each hyperscaler, the market’s central question is whether the return on AI spending justifies the capital committed.
Early futures are snapshots and may change before regular trading. Monday pricing put the chance of a December rate increase near 79.7%, up from around 71% on Friday, limiting relief from lower oil. Supply risk also remained after Yemen’s Houthis said King Khalid Airport in Riyadh would continue to be targeted. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports November 2.
What to Watch Next: Will Big Tech Results Confirm the Rotation?
The factor shift remains in place because the AI-return question is unresolved. IWD benefits from energy and financial weights when Brent exceeds USD 110 and long yields approach 5%. IWM provides broader participation without megacap concentration, though a 340-basis-point high-yield spread restricts smaller companies. QQQ’s futures weakness shows that investors are waiting for operating evidence before rebuilding technology exposure.
The sequence follows the selloff on October 22, when the technology contract dropped below its earlier level above 30,000, while Dow futures approached 52,560. The Federal Reserve decision arrives October 28, alongside Microsoft and Alphabet results. Amazon, third-quarter GDP and PCE inflation follow October 29. Chevron (NYSE:CVX) and Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) report October 30, 2026. Energy results on October 30 add a direct check on value’s oil exposure. Meanwhile, the USD 270 support area and USD 286 resistance point provide reference levels for IWM, not forecasts. October 29 brings both the Amazon release and the growth and inflation readings, so the same session can affect corporate-spending confidence, oil-sensitive value shares and financing costs for small companies. Those releases can either validate the rotation or rapidly reverse it. Since December 2000, no earlier month had supplied a benchmark for a style gap of this scale.
