Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) shares are trading up 2.21% at $741.27, and the stock's 50-day simple moving average has moved below its 200-day, a pattern technical analysts call a death cross. The company has a market capitalization of $340.74 billion.

The signal is derived from past prices and does not reflect operating results. Caterpillar reported second-quarter results on August 4.

Sales Rise 24% Across Primary Segments

Sales and revenues were $20.5 billion, up 24% from $16.6 billion. Operating profit was $4.30 billion, up 50%, for a margin of 20.9%, and the adjusted operating margin was 21.9%.

Profit per share was $7.77, and adjusted profit per share, excluding restructuring costs, was $8.17. Operating profit rose faster than sales, which grew 24%, as the margin widened. The chief executive cited strong order rates and a growing backlog and described broadening momentum across all three primary segments, although the release gives no backlog figure.

Construction Industries Leads the Growth

Construction Industries sales were $8.35 billion, up 35%, and segment profit rose 57% to $1.95 billion at a 23.3% margin. Resource Industries sales were $4.65 billion, up 20%, with segment profit up 23% to $693 million at a 14.9% margin.

Power and Energy sales were $8.24 billion, up 17%, and segment profit rose 30% to $2.03 billion at a 24.6% margin. Financial Products revenues were $1.15 billion, up 10%, and segment profit rose 32% to $328 million.

Tariff Recoveries and Cash Returns Shape the Quarter

Operating profit included $392 million of expected recoveries of tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The adjusted operating margin excludes only restructuring costs, so the recoveries remain in the 21.9% figure.

The release also lists international trade policies and new tariffs among its forward-looking risk factors. It contains no formal financial outlook for the year.

Enterprise operating cash flow was $4.4 billion in the quarter. The company used $1.5 billion of cash to repurchase its common stock and $0.7 billion to pay dividends, or about $2.2 billion in total returned to shareholders.

The release does not report free cash flow for the machinery, energy and transportation businesses. Readers comparing quarters will need the company's filings for that measure, since the release gives only enterprise-level operating cash flow.

Signal Versus Reported Results

The death cross reflects past price action, while the reported figures show 24% growth in sales and revenues and higher profit in every segment, with a tariff recovery included in operating profit. The next report will show whether order rates and the backlog that management described continue to support growth. This review is limited to reported results and does not assess valuation.
