Steel rebar futures stood at CNY 3,017 per ton on Wednesday, Nov. 4, up CNY 21, or 0.70%, after falling toward the CNY 3,000 mark and reaching near three-month lows. The metal is down 1.79% over the past month and 0.20% over the past year.
The data provider's Q4 forecast of CNY 3,019.16 sits almost level with the current price. The chart shows rebar trading in a range of roughly CNY 2,980 to CNY 3,250 over the past year, with the high set in May.
Margins, Demand and Inventories Weigh
Weak profit margins, sluggish downstream demand and elevated inventory levels continue to pressure the market. Environmental restrictions across several northern Chinese provinces also weighed on hot metal production, though output is projected to rebound once the restrictions are lifted.
Iron ore, a key steelmaking input, rose 1.64% to CNY 682 per ton on the session. It remains down 11.89% over the past year.
World Steel Association Trims the Global Outlook
The World Steel Association recently downgraded its global steel demand outlook, projecting a 0.1% contraction this year. That reverses its earlier forecast, made in April, of 0.3% growth.
The report projects Chinese steel consumption to fall 2% this year, as the property sector downturn proves more prolonged than previously anticipated. In contrast, India remains the fastest-growing major steel market, with demand forecast to increase 7.9% in 2026 and 8% in 2027.
U.S. Producers in a Separate Market
U.S. steelmakers operate in a different pricing environment from Chinese rebar, but they share exposure to the global demand picture. Nucor (NYSE:NUE), the largest U.S. steel producer, includes a rebar fabrication segment among its operations. Steel Dynamics (NASDAQ:STLD) and Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE:CLF) are also among the largest domestic producers.
The three companies have exposure to U.S. steel demand, construction and automotive end markets. Cleveland-Cliffs is the more heavily integrated of the group and has been exposed to cross-border Tariff dynamics through its Canadian operations.
Levels and Data to Track
Rebar's first references are the CNY 3,000 mark and the data provider's Q4 forecast of CNY 3,019.16, with the May high near CNY 3,250 as the upper end of the one-year range.
Beyond price, markers include iron ore near CNY 682 per ton, whether northern China's environmental restrictions are lifted and hot metal output rebounds, and the property sector downturn behind the projected 2% fall in Chinese consumption. India's projected 7.9% and 8% demand growth is the main offset named in the report.
