Key Highlights
- Autoliv (NYSE:ALV) closed the October 13, 2026 session at USD 113.79, up 3.02%, with a 0.050% death cross; adjusted operating margin was 9.6% last quarter and the third-quarter report is due October 23.
- Ford Motor (NYSE:F) closed at USD 12.10 with a 0.195% death cross and price about 10% below both averages, despite 2026 adjusted EBIT guidance raised to USD 10.0 billion to USD 11.0 billion; it reports October 28.
- Flowserve (NYSE:FLS) closed at USD 71.47 with a 0.033% death cross after cutting organic sales guidance to about negative 1%, while bookings rose 25.5%; it reports after the close on October 28.
- None of the three had a company announcement dated October 13 that explains its move, and the crosses lag price, so reports on October 23 and 28 are the next real tests.
Autoliv (NYSE:ALV): Margin recovery needed in Q4
A death cross records that the 50-day average of USD 118.64 has fallen under the 200-day average of USD 118.70, a 0.050% gap. The averages lag price, so a cross reflects a decline already completed: the shares at USD 113.79 were about 4.1% below both, simple arithmetic on published numbers. A 3.02% one-day gain inside that setup is a reminder that the label and the daily move are separate measures. No same-day company catalyst was found, so the rise could reflect sector or market flows. A narrow cross can reverse if the rally continues, so it should be read as context, not a signal. Closes within a few cents of a long-term average often sit on either side of it for days, which is why such readings are weak evidence. Autoliv (NYSE:ALV) reported second-quarter organic sales growth of 1.0%, ahead of a 0.3% decline in global light vehicle production. Reported operating margin fell to 6.8% from 9.1% on restructuring in Türkiye, and diluted EPS was USD 1.35, down 38%, though adjusted EPS was USD 2.43. The company reiterated 2026 guidance: organic sales about flat, adjusted operating margin of about 10.5% to 11%, operating cash flow of about USD 1.2 billion and buybacks of USD 300 million to USD 500 million, assuming production falls about 2.5%. The chief risk is delivery of the fourth-quarter margin step-up: management guided the third-quarter margin to the first-half level, so the full-year range implies a sharp improvement. Light vehicle production, tariffs, raw material costs and restructuring charges all affect results. Autoliv sells airbags, seatbelts and steering wheels to automakers, so volumes follow vehicle output with a lag. The October 23 report will show whether the margin and cash flow track guidance.
Ford Motor (NYSE:F): Raised guidance, price 10% lower
The 50-day average of USD 13.42 sits below the 200-day average of USD 13.45, a 0.195% gap, so the crossover itself is marginal. The more notable fact is distance: at USD 12.10 the shares were about 9.8% below the 50-day and 10.0% below the 200-day average, simple arithmetic on published numbers. Averages lag price, so the cross describes a slide already in the shares. Raised guidance and a lower share price can coexist, because investors may be discounting weaker volumes, tariffs or electric vehicle losses. No same-day company catalyst was found for the 0.83% gain, so it looks like routine trading. Auto stocks often trade on tariff headlines and used-vehicle pricing, so sector news can move shares without a company announcement. Ford Motor (NYSE:F) reported second-quarter revenue of USD 48.3 billion, down USD 1.9 billion. A USD 4.2 billion pre-tax special item, mainly USD 3.6 billion tied to the BlueOval SK disposition and USD 0.5 billion for cancelled electric vehicle programs, produced a GAAP net loss of USD 1.3 billion, or USD 0.33 per share. Ford Pro earned USD 1.7 billion before interest and taxes, down USD 0.6 billion because of aluminum supply constraints linked to Novelis, while Ford Blue earned USD 1.1 billion. Ford Model e lost USD 919 million. Wholesales fell 12% to 1,039,000 units. The company expects Novelis to turn into a net tailwind of about USD 1 billion in 2026, weighted to the second half. Guidance assumes U.S. industry sales of 16.0 million to 16.5 million vehicles and excludes unannounced tariff changes, a major Middle East escalation or a significant U.S. downturn. The company also expects to collect about USD 500 million of a USD 1.3 billion tariff reimbursement recorded in the first quarter.
Flowserve (NYSE:FLS): Guidance cut, bookings strong
The 50-day average of USD 76.38 sits USD 0.02 below the 200-day average of USD 76.40, so the death cross rests on a gap of 0.033%. A moving average cross lags price: the shares at USD 71.47 were already about 6.4% under both averages, simple arithmetic on published numbers, and a modest rally could erase the crossover. The 1.16% gain on October 13 had no stated catalyst. Death crosses are statistical labels that describe a trend already seen, not forecasts, and they matter most when the gap is wide and prices keep falling. Here the more useful evidence is the company's recent guidance and order data. Flowserve (NYSE:FLS) reported second-quarter sales of USD 1,169.2 million, down 3.3% on an organic basis, with adjusted earnings of USD 0.95 per share against USD 0.91. Management cut 2026 organic sales growth to about negative 1% from negative 1% to positive 2%, while raising the low end of adjusted EPS guidance to USD 4.05 to USD 4.20. Orders are the encouraging signal: original equipment bookings rose 43.9% to USD 652.3 million, and backlog includes USD 225 million from the Trillium Valves acquisition. Adjusted operating margin reached 15.3%, up 70 basis points. Reported results included a USD 27.7 million gain on remeasuring a prior FAMCO stake, excluded from adjusted figures. Realignment charges of USD 40.7 million reduced second-quarter operating income, and the Flow Control division posted a reported margin of 3.1%. Flowserve sells pumps, valves and seals into energy, chemicals and power markets, so project timing and Middle East disruption can delay conversion of backlog into sales.
Where Things Stand
The answer is that all three will be judged on their reports, not on the crosses. Autoliv (NYSE:ALV) reports on October 23 and needs a margin step-up in the fourth quarter. Ford Motor (NYSE:F) reports on October 28 with raised guidance, aluminum supply and tariffs in focus. Flowserve (NYSE:FLS) reports the same day after the close with strong bookings and trimmed sales guidance. Prices are 4.1% to 9.8% below the 50-day averages. This is not investment advice.
