Rocky Brands Earnings: Why Did Margin Expand 480 Basis Points?

Rocky Brands (NASDAQ:RCKY) reported third-quarter results on Tuesday, October 27, with net sales of $138.8 million, up 13.3% from $122.5 million. Adjusted diluted EPS was $1.76 versus $1.03 a year earlier, and GAAP diluted EPS was $1.69 versus $0.96. The earnings screen had an EPS estimate of $1.50, which put the adjusted figure about 17.33% above it, as screened.

Gross margin was $62.5 million, or 45.0% of sales, compared with $49.3 million, or 40.2%. Two items helped: $2.5 million of refunds of IEEPA tariffs was recognized in gross margin, and a temporary $3.5 million benefit came from selling free trade zone inventory that carried no incremental tariffs. Management said margin excluding the refund still reflected strong full-price selling.

The company designs and markets footwear and apparel for work, outdoor and western use, selling through wholesale accounts, its own retail channels and contract manufacturing. No numerical guidance was included in the release.

Rocky Brands Sales: Which Channels Drove the 13.3% Gain?

Wholesale net sales rose 11.8% to $99.6 million from $89.1 million. Retail sales grew 20.0% to $35.4 million from $29.5 million, the fastest of the three channels. Contract manufacturing slipped 3.1% to $3.8 million from $3.9 million.

The chief executive said demand was broad based, with several brands posting double-digit sales gains. Management also said it was encouraged by momentum heading into the holiday season and well positioned for a strong finish to the year.

For the first nine months, net sales were $381.6 million versus $342.3 million, and gross margin was $168.7 million versus $139.6 million. Nine-month GAAP diluted EPS was $3.68 versus $2.10, and adjusted diluted EPS was $3.89 versus $2.31.

Rocky Brands Profit: Did Higher Expenses Dent the Operating Leverage?

Operating expenses rose to $44.3 million, or 31.9% of sales, from $37.5 million, or 30.6%. Excluding $0.7 million of acquisition-related amortization, adjusted operating expenses were $43.6 million, or 31.4%, versus $36.8 million, or 30.1%. The gain in gross profit more than absorbed the increase.

Income from operations reached $18.2 million, or 13.1% of sales, versus $11.7 million, or 9.6%. Adjusted income from operations was $18.9 million, or 13.6%, versus $12.4 million, or 10.1%. Net income was $12.8 million versus $7.2 million, and adjusted net income was $13.4 million versus $7.8 million.

Interest expense declined to $2.0 million from $2.6 million as borrowings fell.

Rocky Brands Balance Sheet: What Should Investors Watch Into the Holidays?

Total debt, net of $1.3 million of issuance costs, was $116.0 million, down 16.6% from $139.0 million a year earlier and 5.4% from December 31, 2025. It comprised a $20.5 million senior term loan and $96.8 million of asset-based revolver borrowings. Cash was $2.3 million.

Inventories were $189.7 million, down 2.0% from $193.6 million a year earlier and up 4.7% from $181.1 million at year-end 2025. Other receivables of $11.2 million were mainly the IEEPA tariff refund receivable.

Next, watch how much of the margin gain persists once one-time tariff refund and free trade zone benefits fall away, and whether holiday demand supports the double-digit brand growth management cited.
