Key Highlights
● Several companies beat estimates and raised guidance yet still fell.
● Elevated valuations appear to be behind the harsh reactions.
● Investors focused on details like margins rather than headline beats.
● Not every beat-and-raise report was punished.
On Wall Street, the classic recipe for a rally is to beat estimates and raise guidance. This time, that recipe failed for a long list of companies, as from real-estate data provider CoStar Group to navigation-device maker Garmin, companies delivered solid results and better outlooks, and their stocks still slid.
CoStar sank sharply even after reporting revenue growth and raising its full-year guidance, with one market newsletter saying the revenue guidance only matched expectations, which investors found disappointing. Garmin fell after a record quarter and raised revenue guidance, and GE Vernova dipped despite strong orders, a bigger backlog and a raised, doubled buyback.
Why Good Is Not Good Enough
Several factors appear to be at work. Valuations look elevated to many investors after a strong run, so when a stock is priced for perfection, an in-line outlook can look like a letdown. Investors are also focused on what comes next, with many declines centring on guidance that matched rather than beat expectations.
Rising yields add another headwind, since the Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate range unchanged, but two officials dissented in favor of a hike, and the 10-year Treasury yield pushed past a key psychological threshold, lowering the value of future earnings.
Not All Beats Were Punished
Plenty of companies were rewarded, as Vertiv soared after beating estimates and raising guidance, Labcorp and GE HealthCare climbed on higher forecasts, and Brinker International jumped after raising its outlook above consensus.
About 200 S&P 500 companies have reported, and a large majority have beaten estimates, a reminder that strong headline numbers alone are not always enough when the bar for forward guidance keeps rising.
