Key Highlights
● Alphabet raised its 2026 capital spending plan to $195B-$205B.
● The company's profit miss overshadowed the spending signal.
● Chip stocks did not rally on the spending news.
● Nvidia and Micron slipped in sympathy with Alphabet.
Alphabet delivered two very different messages after the closing bell. Its third-quarter profit missed forecasts, sending the shares sliding sharply in extended trading, but the company also raised its 2026 capital spending forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion, a figure with big implications for the companies that build the hardware behind AI.
Alphabet earned well below consensus estimates, with revenue also falling just short of expectations, while Google Cloud was the bright spot, beating estimates, though free cash flow turned negative and third-quarter capital spending came in below what was expected.
Why Chip Suppliers Care
Capital spending at Alphabet goes largely into data centers, including servers, AI accelerators, memory, networking equipment, power and cooling, and a forecast of up to $205 billion for 2026 means one of the world's largest technology buyers intends to keep its foot on the accelerator.
That spending flows through to Nvidia, memory makers like Micron Technology, custom-chip and networking suppliers such as Marvell Technology, and the equipment companies that sell tools to chip factories.
Why the Stocks Fell Anyway
Despite the bigger spending plan, chip stocks did not cheer after the bell, with Nvidia slipping in extended trading and Micron falling in sympathy, giving back part of a strong regular-session gain.
The focus appeared to be on Alphabet's profit miss and negative free cash flow rather than on the orders its spending implies for suppliers, with one economist offering a longer-term warning about an eventual AI capex bust.
