Key Highlights

● Lennox International cut its 2026 earnings guidance sharply.

● Whirlpool was downgraded on weak demand for home goods.

● Higher mortgage rates are squeezing housing-linked spending.

● Not every consumer category showed the same weakness.

Several companies tied to housing and big-ticket spending trimmed their outlooks, pointing to a more cautious consumer on large purchases. Lennox International, which makes heating and cooling systems, slid after third-quarter revenue and earnings missed estimates and it cut its 2026 adjusted earnings guidance sharply.

Whirlpool edged lower after an analyst downgrade to Sell, citing weak demand for big-ticket home goods, part of a broader pattern of caution around durable goods spending.

Why Big-Ticket Items Are Under Pressure

Higher borrowing costs matter directly for these categories, since many big-ticket purchases are financed, and the average 30-year mortgage rate has risen over the past month, making homeowners less likely to undertake major renovation projects.

The Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate range unchanged, but its statement said inflation remains elevated, and long-dated Treasury yields climbed, adding to the cost pressure on financed purchases.

A Mixed Picture Elsewhere

Not every consumer category showed the same weakness, with Brinker International soaring on strong restaurant sales and Etsy jumping to a 52-week high on an earnings and revenue beat.

The split suggests the consumer pullback is concentrated in financed, big-ticket purchases rather than broad-based across all spending categories.
