Key Highlights
● Mid-sized companies delivered some of the day's most dramatic moves.
● Restaurant chains and Evercore posted sharp gains.
● Landstar and other industrial names tumbled on weak results.
● Guidance mattered more than the quarter just finished in several cases.
Mid-sized companies delivered some of the most dramatic moves, as a wave of third-quarter reports sent stocks sharply in both directions. The broader market edged higher, but the constituents told a story of sharp divergence beneath the surface.
Two restaurant operators led the gainers, with Brinker International, the parent of Chili's, jumping after raising its full-year adjusted earnings guidance, and Wingstop also soaring even though revenue missed expectations.
Financials and Services Jumped
Evercore, the investment bank, rocketed higher after adjusted earnings far exceeded estimates, with net revenue also topping forecasts by a wide margin. The Ensign Group climbed after raising its 2026 earnings outlook, and Hayward Holdings surged after beating estimates and raising guidance.
In several cases, forward guidance appeared to matter more than the quarter just finished, since mid-cap companies tend to be more sensitive to borrowing costs than large caps.
The Losers Were Just as Dramatic
Landstar System tumbled after earnings fell short of estimates, with insurance and claims costs weighing on profit, even though revenue grew strongly and beat estimates. Zurn Elkay Water Solutions slid sharply after a fourth-quarter revenue outlook that fell a little short.
Several companies beat quarterly estimates but still fell on disappointing guidance, underscoring how much investors are now weighing forward outlooks over the results just reported.
