Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) fell on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as bitcoin slipped toward $81,000 and crypto-linked stocks retreated. The largest US crypto exchange moved lower in the S&P 500 as risk appetite faded across technology and digital assets.

Bitcoin traded at about $81,200 to $81,300 late in the day, down by roughly $3,100 to $3,400. It briefly dipped below $81,000. It was bitcoin's biggest drop since June.

Why crypto slid

Market commentary tied the fall in crypto to oil prices above $111 and fading risk appetite. Brent crude settled at $113.17, its highest since May 4, after Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and a media report that the US and Israeli militaries have plans to renew strikes on Iran after the November 3 midterms.

At the same time, a sharp selloff in AI and chip stocks hit speculative corners of the market. The Nasdaq Composite fell 694.00 points to 26,008.86, its steepest drop since June 5.

About $400 million in crypto positions were liquidated, according to market data. Ether traded at about $2,381. The iShares Bitcoin Trust also fell.

Crypto stocks gave back gains

Coinbase, Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) and Circle (NYSE:CRCL) all retreated after gains on Wednesday, according to market data. Strategy, which holds a large bitcoin treasury, fell.

Coinbase earns much of its revenue from trading fees, so its shares tend to move with crypto prices and trading activity. When bitcoin falls and sentiment weakens, the stock usually follows.

In separate news, Coinbase's Irish unit was fined $3.6 million by the Central Bank of Ireland.

Not every crypto-linked name fell. TRON Inc. (NASDAQ:TRON), which holds TRX tokens as a treasury asset, rose against the tape, without company news.

A split market

The S&P 500 fell 93.74 points to 7,663.43, its worst day since July. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 11.89 points to 52,867.98, and the Russell 2000 rose 3.01 points. The VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, climbed 2.35 points to 19.03, and trading was heavy, with 18.79 billion shares changing hands on US exchanges against a 17.19 billion average over the prior 20 sessions, according to market data.

Most stocks gained. About two of every three S&P 500 members rose, according to market reports. Consumer staples had their best day since April 2025 and hit a record, health care set a record, and homebuilders rallied as the 10-year Treasury yield fell back below a closely watched threshold for the first time since September 22.

Gold and silver also fell. Gold dropped to its lowest in more than two months, and silver settled at $55.01.

Coinbase Watches Whether Bitcoin Holds Its Ground

Bitcoin's direction remains the main driver for Coinbase. Traders will watch whether it can hold around $81,000 after Thursday's drop.

Oil is another factor. Further gains in crude could keep pressure on risk assets, while any easing in Middle East tensions could help.

The Federal Reserve announces its decision on October 28. The odds of a rate hike next week had fallen sharply, and markets were pricing about one hike before year-end. Rate expectations affect speculative assets such as crypto.

In evening trading, Nasdaq-100 futures were slightly lower at 29,083.75, according to market data.
