PennyMac Financial Services (NYSE:PFSI) shares were trading near their 52-week low at USD 59.77 on October 21, 2026, down 0.83%. The mortgage banking company filed its second quarter 2026 report on August 4, announced a $0.30 quarterly dividend on July 29, and has an agreement pending to buy the subservicing business of Cenlar Capital.
Based in Westlake Village, California, PennyMac Financial Services is a Delaware corporation and a specialty financial services firm focused on producing and servicing United States residential mortgage loans and managing related investments. Its principal operating subsidiary, PennyMac Loan Services, is a non-bank mortgage producer and servicer. The company reports two segments: production, which handles loan origination, acquisition and sale, and servicing, which services loans it holds for sale and loans it services for others, including PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust. Its servicing portfolio totaled $731.1 billion in unpaid principal balance at June 30, 2026.
Revenue Higher, Earnings Lower
Net revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 were $497.0 million versus $444.7 million. Loan production revenues grew to $354.9 million from $299.6 million, helped by higher volume in two of its three production channels, while net loan servicing fees slipped to $145.8 million from $150.4 million. Net interest expense widened to $28.3 million from $17.6 million.
Expenses rose faster than revenue. Compensation was $222.8 million versus $187.5 million, loan origination expense was $93.9 million versus $68.8 million, and servicing expense was $42.5 million versus $28.3 million. Pre-tax income fell to $31.5 million from $76.4 million. The company recorded a $9.8 million tax provision, whereas the prior-year quarter included a $60.0 million tax benefit. Annualized return on average equity was 2.0% versus 13.9%. Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, was $203.8 million, down from $261.0 million.
Interest rate lock commitments issued totaled $33.3 billion versus $39.6 billion. Correspondent volume declined to $18.6 billion from $28.7 billion, while the two direct channels both grew, with consumer direct rising to $6.1 billion from $3.8 billion. For six months, net income was $104.0 million, or $1.94 per diluted share, versus $212.7 million, or $3.97.
Acquisition, Capital and Balance Sheet
Under the Cenlar agreement signed February 11, the company would pay $172.5 million in cash, adjusted for Cenlar's equity, plus up to $85 million of contingent consideration over three years, for subservicing contracts covering about 100 institutional clients. Closing requires regulatory approvals, and the company noted there is no assurance it will close. It recorded $1.2 million of related expenses in the quarter.
The stock repurchase program allows up to $2 billion. Cumulative purchases reached $1.84 billion through June 30, including $50.0 million for 560 thousand shares in the first half of 2026 and none in the second quarter. The company held $214.3 million of cash, and book value per share was $83.49. It also disclosed that all repurchase agreements maturing before the report date had been extended or renewed.
Outlook and Conditions
The filing contains no numerical guidance. Management said recent increases in interest and mortgage rates have limited refinancing opportunities and that, if rates stay at recent levels or rise, production activity and prepayment speeds are expected to decrease. It noted that market indicators suggest the Federal Reserve could begin raising short-term rates later in 2026.
The company said it implemented cost reduction measures in the third quarter in response to declining production volumes and improving technology. It expects non-qualified mortgage production to increase, and expects to sell all of its non-agency correspondent loans, and none of its conventional conforming correspondent loans, to PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust in the third quarter. The dividend of $0.30 per share is payable August 27 to stockholders as of August 17.
