Key Highlights

  • Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP) pays USD 0.50 a quarter, a Yield of about 29.9 percent on a USD 6.68 quote, simple arithmetic, after the payout was halved from USD 1.00 in November 2024.
  • PennantPark Investment (NYSE:PNNT) declared USD 0.08 monthly, about 29.5 percent annualized on a USD 3.25 quote, while net investment income covered only about 58 percent of its June quarter distributions declared.
  • Invesco Mortgage Capital (NYSE:IVR) declared USD 0.12 for September, payable October 15, about 25.2 percent annualized on a USD 5.71 quote, with the price near 0.74 times an estimated USD 7.74 Book Value per share.
  • Arbor Realty Trust (NYSE:ABR) declared USD 0.17 a quarter, about 19.3 percent annualized on a USD 3.52 quote, but second quarter distributable Earnings were only USD 0.10 per share, below the Dividend it declared.

Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP): Yield Funded by Asset Values

Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP) declared a USD 0.50 quarterly distribution per depositary unit on August 3, 2026, payable September 23, with holders able to elect cash or additional units by September 11. Four payments equal USD 2.00, and that divided by the USD 6.68 latest quote is about 29.9 percent (annualized latest dividend divided by quote). The Partnership structure matters: Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP) is a holding company, so distributions depend on asset values, cash and affiliates, not earnings. The second quarter net loss was USD 355 million, or USD 0.52 per unit. Indicative net asset value fell to USD 2.6 billion at June 30, which is about USD 3.66 per unit on simple arithmetic across 710.9 million units, well below the quote. The Holding Company had USD 1.2 billion of cash against USD 4.4 billion of its own debt. The payout has been cut before, from USD 1.00 to USD 0.50 in November 2024. Unit elections instead of cash dilute other holders, and CVR Energy swings can move asset value sharply. The next test is the third quarter declaration, whose timing was not announced.

PennantPark Investment (NYSE:PNNT): Discount to Book

PennantPark Investment (NYSE:PNNT) declared USD 0.08 per share on October 2, 2026, payable November 2 to holders of record October 15. Annualized, USD 0.96 divided by the USD 3.25 quote is about 29.5 percent. The payment splits into a USD 0.04 base and a USD 0.04 supplemental amount, and the supplemental half is the more discretionary piece. As a business development company, PennantPark Investment (NYSE:PNNT) must distribute at least 90 percent of Taxable Income to keep its tax status, which is why payouts are large relative to the share price. The coverage gap is the central risk: net investment income was USD 0.14 per share in the June quarter against USD 0.24 declared. Net asset value was USD 6.56, so the quote sits near 0.50 times book, a discount that reflects doubt about Loan marks. Four portfolio companies were on non-accrual, 2.5 percent of the portfolio at cost and 0.8 percent at fair value. Regulatory Debt to Equity was 1.29 times, and the company expects the payout to come from taxable net investment income.

Invesco Mortgage Capital (NYSE:IVR): Agency Leverage

Invesco Mortgage Capital (NYSE:IVR) announced a September dividend of USD 0.12 per share on September 15, with an ex-dividend and Record Date of September 28 and payment on October 15. Annualized at USD 1.44 over the USD 5.71 quote, the yield is about 25.2 percent, close to the screener figure. The mortgage REIT earns the gap between mortgage yields and repo funding costs, magnified by leverage. About 73 percent of the USD 8.15 billion portfolio at June 30 was agency residential securities, which carry government backed Credit but still move with rates and spreads. Earnings available for distribution were USD 0.50 per share in the second quarter against USD 0.36 of dividends, a cover of about 1.4 times on simple arithmetic. Estimated book value per share slipped from USD 8.03 at June 30 to USD 7.74 at August 31, a preliminary figure, and economic Leverage was 7.5 times. Monthly dividends totaled USD 0.36 in both the first and second quarters, so no 2026 cut appeared in the data reviewed.

Arbor Realty Trust (NYSE:ABR): Lower Payout, Credit Watch

Arbor Realty Trust (NYSE:ABR) declared USD 0.17 per common share, payable August 28, 2026 to holders of record on August 14. The annualized USD 0.68 over the USD 3.52 quote is about 19.3 percent, the lowest of the four. A screener figure of 27.09 percent could not be reconciled to one declared payout and is not used. Year-ago quarterly dividends were USD 0.43 and USD 0.30, so the current payout is far smaller. The mortgage REIT lends through floating rate multifamily loans, about USD 12.11 billion at quarter end, and must pay out at least 90 percent of taxable income, so dividends follow earnings. Second quarter distributable earnings were USD 0.10 per diluted share, below the dividend. Nineteen loans totaling USD 428.8 million were non-performing before USD 31.1 million of reserves. Arbor Realty Trust (NYSE:ABR) raised about USD 500 million in July and bought back stock at USD 5.42 per share, which it put at 49 percent of book value. Credit performance on the loan book is the swing factor, and a later cut remains possible.

Where Things Stand

These four yields, from 19 to 30 percent, are high because share prices are low relative to payouts, not because the payouts are secure. Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP) trades at a large premium to its estimated asset value per unit yet pays out of asset values. PennantPark Investment (NYSE:PNNT) trades near half of book. Invesco Mortgage Capital (NYSE:IVR) trades at about 0.74 times book. Arbor Realty Trust (NYSE:ABR) yields less after a payout cut. Each yield is a snapshot of the latest distribution and is not guaranteed. Investors should watch the next declarations, coverage and book value updates. Quotes are screener figures and may change.
