Recommendation Rationale – Sell at USD 41.75 

• In Q2 FY 2024, CHEF’s selling, general and administrative expenses increased by approximately 8.8% to $194.8 Mn for the second quarter of 2024 from $179.0 million for the second quarter of 2023. The increase was mainly because of higher depreciation and amortization due to acquisitions and facility investments, and increased costs associated with compensation and benefits, facilities and distribution 
• CHEF’s success depends to the significant extent upon general economic conditions, including disposable income levels as well as changes in consumer discretionary spending. Therefore, uncertain economic environment might impact its financial results.
• Also, the foodservice distribution industry is highly fragmented and competitive.

Fundamental Valuation

CHEF is exposed to the risks related to higher inflation, slowdown in the industry, global economic downturn, etc. Therefore, CHEF is expected to trade at slight discount considering the risks associated. For conducting the valuation, the following peers have been considered: US Foods Holding Corp, United Natural Foods Inc, etc.

Given its current trading levels, and risks associated, it is prudent to book profit at the current levels. 

Hence, a ‘Sell’ rating has been provided on the stock at the current price of USD 41.75 per share as on 18 October 2024.
