Teradyne's revenue surged in the third quarter, but a fourth-quarter outlook that merely bracketed Wall Street's forecasts sent the chip-testing company's shares lower even as semiconductors rallied.

Teradyne (NASDAQ:TER) slid on Wednesday, October 28, falling on the S&P 500 even as most of the semiconductor sector climbed for a fourth straight day.

Why Bracketing Guidance Disappointed

The maker of automated test equipment for chips reported surging revenue in the third quarter. But its fourth-quarter guidance was seen as only bracketing expectations, according to market recaps of the session, meaning the range sat around consensus rather than clearly above it.

When a company's guidance range straddles analysts' estimates, it effectively tells investors that results are likely to land near what was already expected. Teradyne's surging revenue showed strong demand for its testing systems, which chipmakers use to check that semiconductors work correctly before they are shipped, but investors wanted evidence that momentum would keep accelerating into year-end.

Swimming Against the Chip Tide

Teradyne's decline stood out against a powerful rally in semiconductors. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose for a fourth straight session to 11,684.00. Memory stocks led after South Korea's SK hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) reported a blockbuster quarter, with Micron (NASDAQ:MU) and Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) climbing.

Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) and Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT), fellow chip-equipment suppliers, also rose. After the bell, chip-equipment maker KLA (NASDAQ:KLAC) rose in extended trading after beating revenue and earnings forecasts and offering strong guidance tied to AI demand.

Fed Holds, Nasdaq Gains

The broader market rose modestly after the Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate range unchanged in a 10-2 vote. The S&P 500 rose 21.38 points to 7,743.98, its third straight gain. The Nasdaq Composite added 72.04 points to 26,549.85 and the Nasdaq-100 gained 161.72 points to 29,813.16.

Breadth was narrow, though, with the equal-weight S&P 500 slipping slightly. Long-dated Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year pushing past a key psychological threshold.

What to Watch

For Teradyne, investors will watch for signs of whether AI-related test demand can push results above the top of its guidance range, and for analyst reaction to the outlook.

Big-tech capital spending remains a key driver for chip-equipment makers. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) reported after Wednesday's close, with Alphabet raising its capital spending forecast, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) reports after Thursday's close.
