Shares of Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged on Friday, October 30, 2026, one of the steepest declines among large companies on the NYSE Composite. The selloff came despite a third-quarter report that topped expectations, as investors focused on a warning from chief executive Steve Huffman about user traffic.

Reddit posted revenue of $895 million, ahead of estimates of roughly $875 million to $878 million, and Earnings of $1.40 a share, above the $1.33 to $1.35 consensus, according to market data. But its fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion trailed the $1.05 billion analysts expected.

Reports differed on the size of the drop, with multiple sources all showing a steep decline.

Google's AI and the traffic question

The bigger concern was users. Huffman warned that total daily active uniques could fall in the fourth quarter from 130.3 million, as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cut the search referrals that send visitors to Reddit, according to market data. U.S. daily active uniques slipped from a year earlier to 50.7 million.

"Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself," Huffman said. He added: "So we will likely be trading reach for engagement." The company also plans to require logins, according to market data.

Analysts turn cautious

Several firms reacted. KeyBanc downgraded the stock to Sector Weight, according to market data, and Citizens also downgraded it, according to market data. A Jefferies (NYSE:JEF) analyst said the shares could be rangebound in the near term, market reports said.

Reddit's warning echoed through the social-media group. Snap (NYSE:SNAP) and Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) also fell, with Pinterest extending losses after missing third-quarter estimates. Meta (NASDAQ:META) dipped as well.

The episode adds to a broader debate about how AI-powered search changes the flow of traffic across the internet. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Google's parent, had its own rough week, suffering its worst day ever on Thursday after its free Cash Flow came in deeply negative.

A brutal day for tech

Reddit's slide came on one of the worst days of the year for technology. The Nasdaq Composite fell 747.73 points to 25,437.00, its worst day since June, after Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s cash-burn warning set off a global chip selloff and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results raised fresh concerns about AI spending. The S&P 500 lost 140.32 points to 7,580.07 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 572.25 points to 51,770.31.

A senior market analyst summed up the mood: "The message from investors is becoming clearer: strong AI Demand is no longer enough on its own." A trading specialist said: "A lot of them kind of got ahead of themselves. It's all earnings based and right now, they're not producing,"

Investors rotated into energy, consumer staples, utilities and health care, while the Cboe (CBOE:CBOE) Volatility index rose to 19.42.

What to watch

Investors will track Reddit's user numbers in the fourth quarter to see how much Google's AI search features cut traffic, and how the planned login requirement affects engagement. Investors will also watch for further analyst revisions after the guidance.

On the broader calendar, the midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the ISM purchasing managers' surveys and the October jobs report on Friday, Nov. 6, will shape the outlook for rates and for Growth Stocks heading into year-end.
