Games lead second-quarter growth

NetEase, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTES) announced unaudited second-quarter and interim 2026 results on 20 August 2026. Net revenues were RMB30.1 billion (US$4.4 billion), up 7.9% year on year, and games and related value-added services accounted for RMB25.0 billion of that total, an increase of 9.7%. The games segment therefore explains most of the group's growth in the period.

Business and sector

NetEase is a Chinese internet technology company that develops and operates online games, both self-developed and licensed, for PC and mobile platforms. Alongside games it runs Youdao, an education technology and learning services business, NetEase Cloud Music, an online music platform, and a group of innovative businesses. Its American depositary shares trade on Nasdaq, and the company also has a Hong Kong listing.

The sector is shaped by regulatory approvals for new game titles in China, competition from other large domestic publishers, and the need to build franchises that can succeed overseas. Game revenue depends on a pipeline of new releases and on the longevity of established titles, so quarterly results can vary with launch timing.

Latest reported results

For the quarter ended 30 June 2026, Youdao revenue was RMB1.5 billion, up 3.5%, NetEase Cloud Music revenue was RMB2.0 billion and relatively stable, and innovative businesses and others generated RMB1.6 billion, down 3.5%. Gross profit was RMB21.2 billion, up 17.5%, while total operating expenses were RMB9.1 billion, up 1.5%.

Operating profit rose to RMB12.1 billion from RMB9.1 billion in the second quarter of 2025. Net income attributable to shareholders was RMB7.0 billion (US$1.0 billion), compared with RMB8.6 billion a year earlier, and non-GAAP net income attributable to shareholders, which excludes share-based compensation, was RMB7.7 billion, compared with RMB9.5 billion. Earnings per American depositary share were US$1.61, against US$1.99.

Financial performance and industry context

The year-on-year decline in net income occurred even as operating profit increased, so the two measures moved in different directions in this quarter.

Cash generation remained substantial. Net cash from operating activities was RMB10.0 billion (US$1.5 billion), compared with RMB10.9 billion in the second quarter of 2025. Net cash at 30 June 2026 was RMB167.5 billion (US$24.7 billion), compared with RMB163.5 billion at 31 December 2025. Dollar amounts were translated at US$1.00 to RMB6.7851.

That balance sheet gives the company flexibility to invest in game development, artificial intelligence and overseas publishing, although the release does not itself state how any surplus cash will be allocated.

Risks and uncertainties

Regulation of the Chinese games industry, including licensing of new titles and rules on minors' play time and spending, is a continuing factor. Hit titles can be difficult to replicate, and players' tastes can change quickly. Because games generate most revenue, weakness in a few major titles could outweigh growth elsewhere in the group. Exposure to competitors, platform fees and licensing relationships adds further uncertainty.

The non-games businesses are much smaller than games, and innovative businesses declined in the quarter. Currency translation between the renminbi and the US dollar affects reported dollar figures, and geopolitical tension, including tariffs and restrictions on cross-border investment, could influence overseas expansion and the ADS programme.

Game pipeline and the profit gap

The next scheduled event is the third-quarter 2026 results announcement. Readers may follow the pipeline and release timing of new games, performance of established titles, cost control relative to gross profit, the direction of net income relative to operating profit, Youdao's progress and the size of net cash. Any regulatory announcement on game approvals would also be relevant, as would commentary on strategy and capital.
