Marvell Technology shares climbed on Wednesday, October 28, as chip stocks rallied for a fourth straight day on the back of strong memory-industry results.
Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL) rose during the regular session as a broad semiconductor rally helped lift the Nasdaq-100. The chipmaker climbed alongside Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Arm (NASDAQ:ARM) and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), according to a closing recap, in a move that appeared driven by sector-wide momentum rather than company-specific news.
A Rally Born in Korea
No individual catalyst for Marvell was cited. The stock moved with its peers on a day when AI hardware names were back in favor. The day's spark came from SK hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY). The South Korean memory maker reported a more than sevenfold jump in profit and said it sees the memory shortage lasting into 2030. Its US-listed shares soared, and South Korea's KOSPI index surged.
That news reignited enthusiasm for the chips that power AI data centers. Memory makers Micron and Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) climbed, as did storage company Seagate (NASDAQ:STX). Chip-equipment makers Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) and Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) also rallied, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose for a fourth straight session, closing at 11,684.00.
Marvell's AI Exposure
The AI infrastructure trade got further support from Vertiv (NYSE:VRT), which rocketed after its organic orders more than doubled, and Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), which jumped after setting a fiscal 2030 revenue target of at least $225 billion.
Marvell designs custom chips and networking silicon used in data centers, including the high-speed optical and electrical connectivity chips that link AI processors together. It also builds custom AI accelerators for large cloud companies, making it a natural beneficiary when investors grow more confident that AI spending will continue.
A Cooler Tone After the Close
The mood shifted after the bell. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) slid sharply in extended trading after missing estimates on both revenue and earnings and reporting negative free cash flow, although it raised its 2026 capital spending forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion. Nasdaq-100 futures dipped overnight, and Micron and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) slipped in sympathy.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) rose after its Azure cloud business accelerated. BCA Research's Peter Berezin offered a longer-term warning that an AI capex bust could arrive eventually, though probably not until 2028.
What to Watch
The Nasdaq-100 closed at 29,813.16, up 161.72 points. The Nasdaq Composite rose 72.04 points to 26,549.85, and the S&P 500 added 21.38 points to 7,743.98 for a third straight gain. Technology led the S&P 500's sectors. Nvidia was a laggard, slipping during the session.
The key test is Thursday's open, when investors will see whether Alphabet's miss drags on chip stocks or whether the rally's momentum holds. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), one of the largest cloud spenders and a Marvell customer, reports after the close.
