KLA shares climbed in extended trading on Wednesday, October 28, after the chip-equipment maker topped forecasts and issued strong guidance tied to the AI build-out.
KLA Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) added to a strong day for semiconductor stocks, rising after the closing bell once its quarterly results beat estimates. The S&P 500 member reported revenue and earnings per share ahead of expectations and issued strong guidance on demand linked to artificial intelligence, according to a closing recap.
Inspecting the AI Boom
KLA makes process-control and inspection equipment that chipmakers use to spot defects and measure features on wafers as they move through the factory. As chips grow more complex, particularly the advanced processors and high-bandwidth memory used in AI data centers, the need for that kind of precision rises.
That positions KLA as a supplier to the supplier. When memory makers and foundries expand capacity to serve AI customers, they buy tools from KLA and its peers. The company's strong guidance suggests those orders are continuing to flow, with AI-related demand doing much of the heavy lifting.
Riding the Chip Rally
The after-hours gain followed a powerful regular session for the group. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose for a fourth straight day to close at 11,684.00. Fellow equipment makers Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) and Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) both rallied during the session, and memory names Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) and Seagate (NASDAQ:STX) climbed as well.
The spark came from South Korea, where SK hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) reported a more than sevenfold jump in profit and said it expects the memory shortage to last into 2030. Its US-listed shares soared, and South Korea's KOSPI index surged.
Clouds After the Close
Not every after-hours signal was positive for AI. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) slid sharply in extended trading after missing estimates and reporting negative free cash flow, which weighed on Nasdaq-100 futures. Micron and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) also slipped after the bell in sympathy. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), however, rose after its Azure cloud business accelerated.
Some strategists remain cautious on the longer horizon: BCA Research's Peter Berezin said he thinks the market is heading for an AI capex bust, though probably not until 2028.
What to Watch
The S&P 500 closed at 7,743.98, up 21.38 points, for a third straight gain, while the Nasdaq Composite added 72.04 points to 26,549.85. Technology led sector gains, though breadth was narrow: an equal-weighted version of the S&P 500 slipped slightly, and volume ran below its 20-day average.
KLA's call commentary on memory customers, advanced packaging and China will be closely parsed. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), one of the largest spenders on AI infrastructure, reports after Thursday's close, with Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Meta (NASDAQ:META) due later this week.
