Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:CRDO) more than doubled its revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, reported on September 1, 2026, yet GAAP operating income fell from the previous quarter as operating expenses rose and the balance sheet absorbed a large increase in goodwill. The pairing of rapid growth with a heavier cost structure is the central feature of the report.

Business and sector

Credo supplies high-speed connectivity products for data infrastructure used in artificial intelligence. Its portfolio includes Active Electrical Cables, optical transceivers, silicon photonics components, digital signal processors, memory and chip-to-chip interconnect, and retimers for Ethernet and PCIe. The chief executive describes a range spanning connectivity from millimeters to kilometers across copper and optics. Demand depends heavily on the pace at which large operators build AI data centers, which can be uneven from quarter to quarter.

Quarterly results

For the quarter ended August 1, 2026, revenue was $479.0 million, up 9.6% on the previous quarter and 114.7% on the year-earlier quarter. GAAP gross margin was 64.5%, down from 68.2% in the prior quarter, while non-GAAP gross margin was 68.0%. Total GAAP operating expenses were $188.4 million, against $142.2 million in the prior quarter, and GAAP operating income was $120.7 million, against $155.8 million. Research and development spending rose to $114.5 million from $90.5 million, and selling, general and administrative expense to $73.9 million from $51.7 million.

GAAP net income was $129.4 million, or $0.67 per diluted share, compared with $63.4 million, or $0.34, a year earlier, but below the prior quarter's $169.1 million, or $0.88. Non-GAAP net income was $236.3 million, or $1.20 per diluted share, which the chief executive described as 140% growth. Non-GAAP measures exclude share-based compensation, acquisition and integration costs and amortization of acquired intangibles, so the gap between the two sets of figures is large. Other income, net, was $8.1 million. The quarter also included a small income tax benefit of $0.6 million, which modestly supported GAAP net income.

Balance sheet changes

Cash and short-term investments totaled $764.3 million at the quarter end. Cash and cash equivalents were $466.9 million, down from $1,165.0 million three months earlier, while goodwill rose from $92.8 million to $986.4 million and intangible assets from $29.3 million to $378.8 million. Additional paid-in capital also increased. These changes are consistent with an acquisition paid for partly in cash and partly in equity.

Inventories rose to $313.1 million from $250.8 million, and accounts receivable to $288.8 million from $233.4 million, as revenue grew.

Outlook and risks

For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Credo expects revenue of $525 million to $535 million, GAAP gross margin of 62.9% to 64.9% and non-GAAP gross margin of 67.0% to 69.0%. GAAP operating expenses are guided to $199 million to $204 million, and non-GAAP operating expenses to $100 million to $105 million.

Risks include the company's cautionary language on product launches, technology developments, and expectations about its markets, and it refers readers to the risk factors in its annual report filed with the SEC on June 15, 2026. Commercial uncertainties also include integration of acquired businesses, higher inventory and receivables as the business scales, and reliance on AI infrastructure spending.

Second-Quarter Guidance and the Goodwill Question

Credo's first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $479.0 million rose 9.6% on the previous quarter and 114.7% on the year-earlier quarter, but GAAP operating income fell to $120.7 million from $155.8 million as operating expenses rose to $188.4 million. Cash and cash equivalents fell to $466.9 million from $1,165.0 million while goodwill rose from $92.8 million to $986.4 million.

The second-quarter report should show whether revenue reaches the guided range of $525 million to $535 million and whether gross margins hold at the forecast levels as the product range broadens. Operating expense growth against revenue, the contribution of acquired products, working-capital intensity, and any disclosure that clarifies how the recent increase in goodwill relates to revenue and profit are further points to follow.
