Key Highlights
● Arm shares fell 9.41% to $207.24 in pre-market trading on Friday.
● The slide follows Alphabet's record one-day drop and weak reports from Amazon and Intel.
● Intel warned PC chip sales would fall more than 20% sequentially this quarter.
● Arm reports fiscal second-quarter results on November 4, with Qualcomm also reporting next week.
Arm Holdings (NASDAQ:ARM) shares were down 9.41% at $207.24 in pre-market trading as of 8:23 a.m. ET Friday, according to market data, putting the chip designer among the hardest-hit large technology stocks of the morning. Market reports listed Arm alongside AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) and Micron (NASDAQ:MU) as chip names trading 2% to 9% lower before the bell.
One of the steepest drops among large chip names
No new company announcement was found. The move appears to be driven by the wider selloff that followed Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s record one-day drop on Thursday and weak reports from Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC). An automated market-data summary links the decline to the tech selloff after Alphabet, the company's upcoming Earnings on November 4 and uncertainty around litigation with Qualcomm; the summary source cautions that such summaries may not reflect the direct cause, so those points are unconfirmed.
Why Intel's PC warning and AI capex fears reach Arm
Arm does not make chips. It designs processor architectures and licenses them to companies such as smartphone makers, PC-chip designers and cloud providers, earning upfront license fees and royalties on every chip shipped. That means its Revenue depends on unit volumes across phones, PCs and data centers, and on the price of the chips that use its designs.
Two threads from this week cut against that model. First, PCs: Intel warned that PC chip sales would fall more than 20% sequentially this quarter and that weakness would last into 2027, with chief executive Lip-Bu Tan saying customers "began signaling a PC slowdown based on the memory prices and availability." Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) likewise said rising memory and storage costs were pushing up PC prices and weakening demand, according to one report. Arm has been trying to expand in Windows laptops, so a shrinking PC market slows that push.
Second, data centers: large cloud companies increasingly build their own Arm-based server processors. Amazon's Graviton, Google's Axion and Microsoft's Cobalt chips are all built on Arm designs. If hyperscalers rein in spending after Alphabet's minus $9.1 billion free Cash Flow and Amazon's $42.4 billion trailing outflow, Arm's fastest-growing Royalty stream could cool. At the same time, Microsoft said about 75% of its capex now goes to short-lived Assets such as GPUs and CPUs, a sign that chip Demand remains strong today.
Valuation, index role and what to watch
Arm has traditionally traded at a high valuation relative to earnings, which tends to magnify moves when sentiment turns. The company is majority-owned by SoftBank Group, which leaves a relatively small free float and can amplify volatility. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 2.3% overnight as the AI selloff spread across Asia. Rates add to the pressure on richly valued stocks: the Fed held this week after a September hike, markets see a high chance of another increase in December, and the 10-year Treasury Yield sits near 4.94% to 4.99%.
Arm is a member of the Nasdaq-100, and Nasdaq-100 futures were down about 2.6% around 8 a.m. ET, per market quotes. Key risks include a prolonged PC slump, slower smartphone upgrades if memory costs stay high, hyperscaler capex restraint and legal disputes with customers.
The next big test is Arm's own fiscal second-quarter report next week, which market data dates to November 4. Qualcomm, one of Arm's largest licensees, also reports next week, and its comments on handset and PC demand will be closely read for royalty implications. Before then, Tuesday's midterm elections loom; one Investment partner said a strong Democratic "blue wave" would likely be negative for AI names and tech.
