Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged on Friday, October 30, 2026, after a third-quarter report in which one line from its chief executive captured the market's concern. "So we will likely be trading reach for engagement," CEO Steve Huffman said

Reports differed on the size of the decline, but the stock was among the most heavily sold names in the Russell 1000 and one of the most-discussed stocks of the session. The drop came despite Revenue and earnings that beat forecasts.

Reach versus engagement

In plain terms, reach is how many people visit Reddit, and engagement is how much those people use it. Huffman's comment signaled that Reddit expects to see fewer visitors in the near term while trying to deepen the activity of the users it keeps.

The company put a number on the reach side of that trade. Huffman warned that total daily active uniques could fall in the fourth quarter from 130.3 million. U.S. daily active uniques slipped from a year earlier to 50.7 million. Market reports said that the company also plans to require logins, a step that can reduce casual visits while encouraging people to sign in and participate.

Why search is changing

Huffman tied the warning to a shift in how people use search engines. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are cutting referrals to Reddit, because users can get answers directly on Google's results page rather than clicking through to a Reddit thread.

"Web search is evolving from a gateway to the web to becoming an AI-powered destination itself," Huffman said

For Reddit, search has been an important way for new and occasional visitors to discover conversations on the site. Fewer of those visitors means a smaller audience for advertisers, even if the remaining users are more active.

The quarter itself was strong. Revenue was $895 million, ahead of forecasts of about $875 million to $878 million, and Earnings Per Share of $1.40 topped estimates of $1.33 to $1.35. But fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion fell short of the $1.05 billion analysts expected.

Analysts responded with downgrades. Market reports said that KeyBanc downgraded the stock to Sector Weight, and market reports said a downgrade from Citizens. A Jefferies (NYSE:JEF) analyst sees the stock possibly rangebound in the near term, according to market data

A heavy market

Reddit's slide came on Wall Street's worst day since June. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 747.73 points to 25,437.00. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s cash-burn warning and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s negative trailing free Cash Flow drove a broad selloff in technology stocks, while energy and consumer staples rose.

What to watch

The coming quarters will show how the trade-off Huffman described plays out. Investors will watch fourth-quarter user numbers against the company's warning, and whether measures such as required logins lift engagement enough to support Advertising revenue.

Google's continued rollout of AI search features will also shape Reddit's traffic. Beyond the company, the market faces Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s results on Monday, November 2, the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report on Friday, November 6, events that could sway sentiment toward internet stocks after a punishing week.
