Anterix (NASDAQ:ATEX) holds 900 MHz spectrum, a block of radio frequencies it has been repositioning for utilities and other critical-infrastructure users. Its balance sheet is simple, but the value of its underlying licenses is harder to pin down. On the fiscal first-quarter call in August, management offered one reference point: about 85% of its spectrum, measured in MHz-POPs, remains available to monetize, and applying its earlier average transaction price of roughly $1.40 per MHz-POP implies a gross value above $4 billion. Executives described this as an illustration rather than a forecast.
A Modest Operating Base
A MHz-POP multiplies spectrum bandwidth in megahertz by the population covered, giving a common yardstick for pricing licenses. Anterix reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results on August 11, 2026. GAAP revenue was about $2 million and operating expenses were $9.5 million. The company recognized roughly $11 million of gains from broadband license exchanges and expects at least a single-digit-million gain the following quarter. It ended the period with about $116 million of cash and no debt, helped by around $20 million from stock option exercises. About $226 million remained on its buyback authorization, due to expire in late September.
Turning Spectrum Into Cash
The investment case rests on converting spectrum into cash through utility deals, license exchanges or a larger strategic transaction. Management said conversations about utility and strategic interest had increased, with nearly a dozen active opportunities spanning seven-, eight- and nine-digit potential deals, though none was named. Anterix was added to the Russell 2000 Defensive and Russell 2000 Growth-Defensive indices in June 2026. A market data summary put the closing price at $84.33 on October 2, 2026.
Arithmetic, Not a Price Tag
Anterix is a story about a large spectrum holding paired with a modest operating base. The more than $4 billion reference is arithmetic, not a price tag, and realizing it runs through negotiated transactions whose terms depend on buyer, geography and timing. The pace of signed deals and cash actually collected may prove a more reliable guide than the headline figure.
