Viavi Solutions (NASDAQ:VIAV) fell 10.20% on Friday as optical and networking stocks were caught in a broad technology sell-off. A search of news dated October 29 and 30 found no company-specific announcement. The company has said it will report fiscal first-quarter 2027 results on Wednesday, November 4, after the market closes, so the move came ahead of its next scheduled update.

What Viavi Does

Viavi makes network test, monitoring and assurance equipment used by telecom operators, cloud providers and equipment makers, and it has an optical security and performance products business. Demand tied to Data Center build-outs and high-speed optical networking has become a larger part of the Investment case, which is why the stock often moves alongside optical component makers and other AI infrastructure names.

The Association Hurt

The selling started with Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), which guided fourth-quarter Revenue to $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion against roughly $17.1 billion expected. Optical and networking names including Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE), Coherent (NYSE:COHR) and Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ:AAOI) were among the hardest hit. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.8%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points, or 2.9%, to 25,437.00, as Intel's weak outlook triggered a chip rout and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results revived worries about AI spending. A market strategist summed up the mood by saying strong AI demand is no longer enough on its own.

Pre-Earnings Caution

Because Viavi is set to report in a few days, Friday's drop may also reflect caution ahead of results, with investors less willing to hold positions in a volatile sector into an Earnings release. That is an interpretation of positioning rather than a confirmed driver.

The November 4 Test

Investors will focus on demand trends from data center and cloud customers, the health of telecom operator spending and any guidance on coming quarters. Commentary on how AI-related orders are tracking could be especially important given Friday's skepticism toward the theme.
